The massive inflation of the RE bubble moved the metric of that perception many many years forward. What used to be a welcome bonus at the end of a loan term (or beyond) had turned into an expectation within years.

The problem was exacerbated by owners gaining virtual ATM access to their 'paper value' via home equity loans.

Personally I dont think (even in the relatively stable Dallas market) that we are close to finding a bottom in housing.
good news for me... I can't wait for a couple of neighborhoods to go on sale!!

Re: savings account question

Honestly? I would just buy guns & ammo with yr savings. Then when yr ready to cash out just go down on Ervay/MLK & get yr money back w/interest.

That or the IRA. Even more so if yr company matches what you deposit from yr paycheck.

A similar thing happened in the late 70s early 80s with regard to farm values. The paper value jumped and implement dealerships were willing to sell an air conditioned, am/fm, blah blah blah over the top priced tractor to a mom and pop farm on that basis.... then poof.... Farm Aid, movies like The River, Country as well as Right to Farm Acts etc etc

oddly enough, these issues have historical precedents - go figure

They appear to be cycles in the system. Some of the issue that I have read about are:

The crashes are not done.

How long will it take for things to go back on the upswing?

Is the current economic model sustainable?

and as the saying goes: "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent."

It looks like the safest solution is to hold on tight and clench ze 'ol buttcheeks.

Re: savings account question

In that case might as well put your money into something worth while and help Al Gore and the Universe grow stronger.

With Gore's help we could all learn to let go of our need for money and become better human beings and better citizens of the world.

If you're lucky maybe a small break in your tax liability but I was just kidding. Please don't buy into it. You'll just help make Gore a richer man.

If you're serious try this. I've been looking into it myself recently.

you have not been reading the installments in David's opus.... pay attention my good man!

but, I do know land is not a commodity easily manufacuted. Food generally requires land for production. I have a farm. If the shit really hits the fan, hell, I can support my extended family on it. And we have lots of guns and ammo in case any of you city slicker types get wise and try sneaking up on us. Besides. Its fucking cold there 4 months of the year... a sufficient deterrent for most grasshopper types.
