KABUL, Afghanistan — Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of the Afghan president and a suspected player in the country’s booming illegal opium trade, gets regular payments from the Central Intelligence Agency, and has for much of the past eight years, according to current and former American officials.

The ties to Mr. Karzai have created deep divisions within the Obama administration. The critics say the ties complicate America’s increasingly tense relationship with President Hamid Karzai, who has struggled to build sustained popularity among Afghans and has long been portrayed by the Taliban as an American puppet. The C.I.A.’s practices also suggest that the United States is not doing everything in its power to stamp out the lucrative Afghan drug trade, a major source of revenue for the Taliban.

The CIA has been in the drug running biz for a long time. Poppy growth exploded by 800% after we went in there. We PAID the Taliban $50 million dollars because the eradicated pretty much all the poppy growth there before 9/11. You know we have all this technology and feet on the ground and we can't find ONE MAN, Osama Bin Laden, pfft.

I think we've got a good idea where he is the issue isn't where as much as the cost in blood/treasure and political capital to get him. Hard choice. His organization has been largely neutered. On 9/12 would you have believed that 8 years later there would be zero successful subsequent attacks on US soil? In re opium... people have to earn a living and oddly enough the Taliban switched its position on the crop and now relies on it for cash. Easiest way to drop the bottom out... legalize it.

I'm not say we should hand it out to school children. I'd advocate some strict controls but its a pretty simple way to eliminate huge costs involved with prohibition, violence associated with the illicit trade as well as property crime committed to support habits... look I'm beating a dead horse here. You really need my to justify this?

Legal or not, if people want it, then they will find it. Why not legalize, control, and tax it?

you cannot legislate the laws of supply & demand out of existence.... where there is demand there will be a supply. Prohibition merely influences cost which has a direct impact on all other factors most sadly the dead bodies.

Who cares?

Anyone who really wants to find any illicit drug can find it with a minimal amount of effort.

It is up to parents to teach their children responsibility. Drugs little different than alcohol. Our culture simply accepts booze more readily at this time.
