Must read books

I believe Joel asked a ways back and I failed to compile a list of any relevance.

Here are my must reads. I have taken the time to go through these and jot down points to further disseminate. As Xian knows... I am working on a book myself... so I have been buried in paper of late.

So here goes...

The Essays of Warren Buffett - A great insight into our gens greatest investor via notes to investors
Your Money and Your Brain - A view of my similar studies in behavior econ
Jessie Livermore - 1929 relived
Atlas Shrugged - By far my favorite
The Black Swan - I am pretty sure this was the one I mentioned before

Thats a good start. I have a few more but I havent quite finished them so I cannot give them their due opinion yet.

Cheers
DA

You need a kick in the nuts for that god awful piece of shit... you know what? I don't give on rat's ass who John Gault is and I find Any Rand's moral philosophy about as bankrupt as any self serving line of bullshit every created to justify being a complete asshole to anyone at anytime in order to do nothing but please yourself and justify it on that bankrupt theory. She was a fucking cunt and her writing is only slightly less tedious than her character was atrocious.

How's that

So anyway....

Dante's Divine Comedy
Shakespeare: Henry V, Richard III, Merchant of Venice, Titus Andronicus (just for the gore)
Poe: Complete works
Kafka: The Trial, The Burrow, Great Wall of China.. and whatever one it is where his watch and the clocktower don't match thus rending the purpose of time pieces moot
Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse V and Welcome to the Monkey House
Burgess: Clockwork Orange
Huxley: Brave New World
Orwell: Animal Farm
Burke: Reflections on the Revolution in France
On War: Clauswitz
Machiavelli: Dicourses
Voltaire: Candide and correspondence w/Catherine the Great
Aquinas: selections from Summa Theologica
Plotinus' Enneads
Augustine: City of God
and some damn good porn

Re: Must read books

yeah, funny enough but i'm more in line with xian's taste in books than da's... hmmm. i seriously doubt i could make it through a book of Warran Buffet's essays... but who knows. i read a book of letters between Thoreau and a friend though.

Quote:
Burke: Reflections on the Revolution in France
that looks interesting... i might check that out

i recently watched Danton, not sure if you ever saw that film... and i also re-watched Waterloo. i'm assuming that book concerns the French Revolution and not about something else... but anyway

i have some "must read" books that i'd list but i really just think people should read more in general. my gfs kid is reading The Odyssey in class right now and he was shocked when i told him that i owned the book and enjoyed reading it.

a couple non-fiction books i enjoyed were

The Park & the People by Rosenzweig and Blackmar... it's a history of Central Park. i'm fascinated by that kind of shit.. hearing about how Central Park came to be both before and during it's construction.

Patriotic Treason by Carton... it's a book about John Brown. there are several books about him and this is the only one i've read but it was a great read... i read it ALMOST in one sitting but it's that easy of a read. i personally think John Brown was a badass and i really really don't want to get in a discussion about it with xian again but i enjoyed reading about him.

um... and i have three bookcases filled with books... or almost filled, i sold a crapload to half price books a couple months back. there is always something fascinating and fun to read about it if you go look.

I've watched some of her videos, interesting woman.

I would also suggest, Life Inc by Douglas Rushkoff.

The list is really more of an investing 101 list.

Hey fuck you! I've used her philosophy to justify me being a selfish asshole to all the girls I've dated and letting them know that if my needs are met first they will be taken care of. Its worked wonders for me Xian.

I have those 2 on my list and will def be checking them out. I read biography on Warren Buffet a while back that was pretty good. It wasn't his Snowball one but one before it. I like the stories about him and his partner in crime Charlie Munger.

Re: Must read books

Currently reading The Shock Doctrine as recommended by Merritt.

I've recently read
Blink and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
Next 100 Years by George Friedman.

Both are pretty good books. Next up in my queue is Generations by William Strauss and Neil Howe.

I also read a couple of programming books from time to time.
