Ford didnt really need to be turned around in the first place... They were the first to see the light of hybrids, smaller sedans, compacts, and less focus towards larger trucks/suvs. Their pipeline of proven and showroom available products are the reason they never needed the bailout money in the first place.

And by pulling forward demand via cash for clunkers they inevitably assured themselves a massive hangover next quarter.

Same thing with GDP. We havent 'turned' anything around. We just injected a one time boost into economy via government spending, first time tax credits for homes and CARS programs.

Well, when you figure out how to read a government GDP report and calculate the percentages (to a certain degree) of the makeup of particular boosts in YOY and YTD numbers accounting for demand in a given segment, I would love to hear yours. You could catch any number of articles discussing the same issue as well.

Regarding Fords state... I am pretty much bottling up their own words spanning from the Mullaly congressional testimony during the bailouts (on why they didnt need it as a short term crutch) to his own words as the CARS program was winding down (dealing with the great boost but unlikely follow through).

With 85% of 1st time home buyers who were eligible to collect the tax credit planning to buy a home anyway, the Brookings institute estimates that the $8,000 credit equates to a cost to the taxpayer of $43,000 per home. This is based on the belief that 85% of the almost 2mm buyers are getting free money. Edmonds.com today is estimating that the Cash for Clunkers program cost taxpayers $24,000 per vehicle sold. They estimate that 82% of sales would have happened anyway and thus the handout of up to $4,500 really only enticed 18% of the buyers of 690k vehicles sold under the program.
