| Call for new state bird (by my dad)
Heh. Thought this was amusing enough to share: Friends, Neighbors, and Fellow Texans, Waking one recent morning in another state, I was delighted to listen to a whole variety of song birds outside my room. I realized then just how much I had missed that sound here in Ft Worth. Here, the rasping croaks of grackles, reminding me of something out of Tolkien, have supplanted most of the sweeter notes of the smaller birds. Perhaps it is time for Texas to garner a new state bird, big and black as oil, arrogant and vicious in its demeanor, joining in great flocks to attack weaker birds-even those of its own kind. A bird unsurpassed in polluting great areas with its foul fecal material. A bird that darkens the skies with its black hoards. Oh, I know we have the Mockingbird now, and it was appropriate for its time. While it has no song of its own, it masterfully assumes those of more original and creative birds. It, too, is aggressive, but in a saucy, daredevil way. And it is, of course, a handsome creature. But the Mockingbird's time has flown, far outstripped by its great, black cousins. And for the state that has unleashed George W. Bush upon the world, the grackle stands head-and-shoulders above the rest as the prime candidate for Texas' state bird. While some might nominate the turkey buzzard, its numbers are too few and its domain generally too remote, not to mention that it is far too quiet. No, the grackle it must be. So I urge you to contact your legislator today, and let's not waste another minute in giving Texas the bird-the bird it must have. Tell your friends; let's get this done. grackles? o my goodness, i should hope not. they are like pigeons in texas. foul fowl how about a nice bluebird to match the bluebonnet? or a mean-spirited & agressive cardinal to match the cowboy?
