I would think that a little thinking through why they are taking away the guns would lead you to the logical conclusion that it will aid in bringing stability to the unstability created by not having a police force.

Furthermore, there is a big difference between Military grade weapons, which common civilians have in that region and pistols and hunting rifles that we have here.

Agreed that on the surface it can be interpreted like you stated, but I do not believe that they are taking away their guns so that we can inforce are will on the Iraqi people. I have a feeling that world opinion would be quite against that.

Man, this seems like pissing on the forest fire to me... the pictures on cnn and the web show that iraq is like a gun show clearing house. Deadly weapons almost seem to be growing from trees if the footage i've seen is to be believed. I'm definately over-generalizing but it seems that any time a leader starts taking an enlightened view about things someone shoots him and cuts off his head and drags it through the town square. We should just bombard them with spaghetti westerns and let the old west meet the middle east.
