Rave Act Passed

Say Goodbye to your right to dance!!!

- Late on Thursday, April 10, 2003, the Senate and House voted and passed the Illicit Drug Anti-Proliferation Act (formerly known as the RAVE Act) as an attachment to the Amber Alert Bill (a child abduction bill). The bill is likely to be signed into law by the President in the next few weeks. Fax Attorney General Ashcroft right now! Urge him and President Bush to make clear and careful enforcement decisions that uphold our freedom of speech, right to peacefully assemble, and our right to dance! We thank our supporters for their faxes and encouragement. We will continue to work in coalition to fix this dangerous law.

I always knew the link between drugs and our music/scene would be our downfall. Its time to overcome that, show the world that they are two seperate things. Dont be a dumbass!!, this law states that if anyone for any reason is consuming, abusing, carrying, or selling drugs at an event the owner and promoters can be thrown in jail along with you. Don't be stupid!! Keep your drugs off our dancefloor!!

Take Care,

Take Care,
Am I the only one who thinks this is a huge fucking double standard? I'm all for getting rid of the drug abuse at raves, but what the hell is this..

Actually, this law merely extends the powers of the current "Crackhouse Law", which already penalizes venue owners for drug use by patrons, to include those who rent or lease a venue. To be more precise, the Crackhouse Law states that if anyone for any reason is consuming, abusing, carrying, or selling drugs inside a venue (be it a party, club, concert, grandma's house, etc) the owner can be thrown in jail. The RAVE Act simply extends that jurisdiction to include renters of a building since, primarily rave promoters don't own their own venue and rent it from someone else. All the people on this board seem to show littl concern for the Crackhouse Law but have gotten all fired up over the Rave Act. I wonder if they called it by a different name, would the people around here care?

I think if there's a law like this, is should be applicable to all clubs and concerts where other music is being played, because drugs can be connected with all genres of music.. not just electronica. I mean yea there's more usage in this croud - but if they make laws like this for "our people" then laws like this should be out there for all the other people too.

Great!!! Now I can get back to listening to some 40yr. ex-stripper sing Karaoke at some sports bar and talk to people I have nothing in common with! I hope Mr. Biden gets hemorrhoids.

In essence, it's already being fought. If the law it is based on loses, it sets a precedent to be able to beat this one as well.

Actually, the first attempt at such legislation drew an overwhelming response from the jamband community (Phish, Dead, SCI, etc). The sad fact is that these will be the people to change the situation, not the ravers.
