marine boot camp...

has anyone been?

it's actually called marine basic training and i was offered an engineering (audio) job with the air-force band but must go through the six weeks of formal training before i could accept it.

the benifits are bad-ass but i am more than skeptical about joining the military for 4 years. although i would never have to live on base and travel only with the band (no human sheilds here) i still wonder.

any thoughts?

I don't know if you speak with your parents(or if they're alive), but you might talk with some people aged 45+. Considering that Vietnam was going on and there was a draft, there's a large amount of people that age that would have gone through basic. My dad went, but he never told me much about basic itself so I can't really help you.

Just a thought.

Different strokes man.

I respect anyone and everyone who has joined the service, and I feel that we all owe those people the utmost respect and gratitude for what they do.

However, I don't think that anyone should put themselves in a situation such as joining the military simply for the college money. The math doesn't add up. You can work a part time job, get financial aid from other sources and put yourself through school and still live however you want without relying on GI bill funds. But if you feel a sense of duty to yourself or perhaps your country then by all means join the service and give it your all and take full advantage of the benefits they have to offer.

Search yourself and find what is truly right for you before you hand your rights and freedom over to the government for tuition.

M

Well, the reason im going in is simple.......

I need the job experience ......... w/o it, all the computer certifications in the world dont do me a damn bit of good ......

Plus I get an associates in applied computer science after finishing Tech school (6 months of school after boot) for free.

The airfoce just changed thier rules on school ........ used to be that they only paid 70% of tuition off base ..... and 100 on base ..... thats now changed to 100 on base and 100 off base .... so i get a free education I dont have to pay back (not to mention the gi bill) ........ a free associates ......... after about 2 years in there should be no reason for me not to have my Bachelors ...... so a free Bachelors as well ......

Military service looks good on any resume (not to mention a Bachelors in your career field)

Oh..... did i mention the security clearance? For the job I want to do (3CO) you need to have Top secret security clearance ....... once you have that, you dont have to re apply for it for several years ......... so I get out after 4 years and still have my security clearance ......... BAM! I can go up to a private company that is known to contract out to the government and have Top secret Clearance as one of the reasons they should hire me (costs them several thousand dollars a year to get civillians cleared w/ the DOD)

Not to mention I REALLY want to go to japan and chase me some asian girlies ..........

Im hate saying this ........ but my reasons are entirely slefish ..... fuck this gung ho shit ....... i dont want to die ....... I am perfectly happy with my station in life (nerd) ......... I am hoping that after a 4 year stint in the millitary doing a job basically for computer nerds ........ that I might have a chance at employment with the NSA.

There are a million and one reasons to join ............ my reasons? they are all about ME
ME
ME
ME!!

lol
My roommate is about to join up for the same reasons. I can totally understand why and can see the perks of it, but damn....I'm mad at him.

4 years is a small part of your life relatively speaking. The military experience is invaluable. You get a lot more out of it than just college money. Boot camp is hard, but If my doughy ass made it through, just about anybody can. Just don't be a pussy and you'll do just fine. Good luck.

Oh yeah and an add-on is that you'll have the opportunity to screw lots of foreign women.
