Man cuts off his arm

Could you do this? I think I would probably have to just die.

No doubt I'd do it. After suffering for 4 days with no food and little water. Not to mention the immense pain he was in for the 4 days. I'll bet you would start to think it would be a relief to lose that arm.

True. It is really hard to predict what one would do under that level of duress, but four days gives you a loooong time to think about how much you value your life vs. your arm.

The story I read about this earlier said that the boulder was 800-1000 pounds. Regardless, it is likely that his arm was crushed and the circulation was probably cut off for so long that he would have lost his arm anyway. This probably had something to do with his decision. Either way, that is one tough guy.

yeah, regardless of whether or not there was any pain involved, he had to cut off his arm with a pocket knife. It would take a long time to cut an arm off with a pocket knife and it must have gotten pretty messy.

I always find it amazing what the human survival instinct will allow a person to do. Cut off their own limbs, canabalize others, lift cars to save thier children, etc, etc. It is truly incredible that we have such a base instinct to live that it allows us to do the impossible when necessary just to make it one more day.
