Sorry for returning to the topic of the thread, but it turns out this story is a load of shit. More irresponsible journalism used in an attempt to further a political agenda. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2003Jun15.html |

It's quite obvious that you look at the world through purely an us vs. them ("if you're not with us, you are against us") paradigm. It's understandable, it's the sort of fraudulent dualist oppositional mindset preached in this country on all levels. US vs. USSR, Christians vs. Athiests/"non-believers", white vs. black, rich vs. poor, Democrat vs. Republican, Allies vs. Axis, conservativism vs. liberalism, educated vs. uneducated, democracy vs. dictatorship/communism, North vs. South, etc. The problem with this dualist mindset is that it paints the entire world into a black and white paradigm where there is no gray area, no alternative to the status quo options. It's the reason why of the 60+ political parties in this nation alone, only 2 get proper notice from the public, and only a handful more (e.g. libertarian, green, reform) get any notice, but are treated as second class parties who fail to deserve an equal voice. Other political ideas are ignored almost in whole by the population, either through lack of knowledge or interest, and few seldom receive identification or exposure through the media, and never in equality. Through policies of both Democrats and Republicans, a system has been created which is very undemocratic in it's ability to create public apathy towards politics, and the view that the Democratic Party represents liberalism and that the Republican Party represents conservativism. Now granted, there are some in each party who actually do represent these ideas, but most of them (in both parties) are just sycophants and lap dogs of special interest groups and corporations. Just because some of us are liberal, it does not mean we are Democrats, or supported Clinton. Likewise, there are many people here who it seems you think are liberal, but are actually outside of the republican scope of conservativism.

Did you say Duality of Man? Colonel: Marine, what is that button on your body armour? Joker: A peace symbol sir. Colonel: Where'd you get it? Joker: I don't remember sir. Colonel: What is that you've got written on your helmet? Joker: "Born to Kill" sir. Colonel: You write "Born to Kill" on you helmet, and you wear a peace button. What's that supposed to be, some kind of sick joke? Joker: No, sir. Colonel: Well what is it supposed to mean? Joker: I don't know, sir. Colonel: You don't know very much do you? Joker: No sir. Colonel: You better get your head and your ass wired together or I will take a giant shit on you. Joker: Yes sir. Colonel: Now answer my question, or you'll be standing tall before The Man. Joker: I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man sir. Colonel: The what? Joker: The duality of man, the Jungian thing, sir. Colonel: Who's side are you on, son? Joker: Our side, sir. Colonel: Don't you love your country? Joker: Yes, sir. Colonel: Well how about getting with the program? Why don't you jump on the team and c'mon in for the big win? Joker: Yes, sir. Colonel: Son, all I've ever asked of my Marines is for them to obey my orders as they would the word of God. We are here to help the Vietnamese because inside every gook, there is an American trying to get out. It's a hardball world, son. We've got to try to keep our heads until this peace craze blows over. Joker: Aye aye, sir.

I love that scene, it's like a more serious version of Life of Brian: "WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS" "i'm not" "SHH!"
