In the most brutal cases, if the body is too small, they are filetted with a knife until it is big enough... a lot of incidents are typically gang rapes between 5 to 20 attackers...

most rape cases (only 9% convictions) are thrown out of the courts on offbeat technicalities... and because of South Africa's aparteid past, the laws are severely relaxed and in many cases, benefiting black south africans over other minorities...

In India, even though they have laws against it, many families still adhere to the tradition of a dowry. If and when the husband's family doesn't consider the amount of the dowry to be enough, they will torture the new wife...physically, mentally, sexually. Many brides commit suicide, but even more are BURNED to death by the husband or his family. Many young girls resort to suicide instead of marriage to save their parents the financial strife of coming up with a (usually ridiculous) dowry or the imminent torture that results thereof.

What's worse, when a woman is raped in Pakistan, MOST of the women themselves are accused. The maximum sentence for BEING RAPED for a married woman is death by stoning, and for a single woman, it is 100 lashes and 10 years in prison. Their philosophy is this: if a woman is raped, she has committed adultery, and she must have somehow asked for it.
In court, the testimony of the victim or any female witnesses is usually thrown out as not credible, and a woman must have at least 6 male witnesses, "Muslims of good repute," to attest to the fact that she, in fact, did not instigate the rape. Obviously this rarely happens, but for 2 reasons. One is that a man of good repute, hopefully, would not stand around idly and watch a rape occur. The other is that many times, the only available witnesses turn out to be participants.

Also, I'm sure most of us are aware of the underage sex rings in Thailand. An actual travel brochure in a California travel agency read:
"SEX TOURS TO THAILAND, REAL GIRLS, REAL SEX, REAL CHEAP. THESE WOMEN ARE THE MOST SEXUALLY AVAILABLE IN THE WORLD. DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY BUY A VIRGIN GIRL FOR AS LITTLE AS $200?"
I shit you not. These virgin girls are usually either kidnapped or bought from their destitute parents and forced to accommodate up to 15 customers a day. They are tortured if they do not comply. Many of these girls are as young as 10 years old.

Yeh, this is a fucked up world we live in, and no matter how well we think we women fare over here, women are no where near equal, and in many countries we are nothing but playthings for sick, violent men.

Thats pretty common place in many places you look people just don't like getting in other peoples shit. Its proven, case studies about muggers in New York indicate ur chances of someone helping you during a mugging is increased something like 60-70% if only one person sees the incident. Your chances of someone helping if there's a whole group of bystanders is reduced drastically by that same percentage.
The thing is everyone expects someone else to do the job. Like the cure for aides? Cancer, the hungry in somalia how many of you stop and think everyday i gotta work on this and help people get out of this problem. CHances are you think oh some scientist will eventually figure it out. Same with this, people in groups tend to think oh someone in the group will eventually help out, so i'll just watch.
What about the jews in concentration camps everwonder how hitler got away with that? Same concept different time period. Or grassfires along the highway most people assume that someone already called it in, not many of u likely think oh well i should call anyways just to be shure.

Is there any word of this actually occurring from a reputable news source (ie: not some thread on a messageboard on deviantart?)

I'm not saying this never happened. I'm just wondering where this information originally came from (there are tons of urban legends floating around on the internet)

If anyone has a link to a news organization reporting on this, please post it.

Having said that, are you incapable of appreciating the safety you have in America in comparison to India & South Africa? You're not having to come up with 6 witnesses to say you didn't start it, you have no fear of being stoned to death, and you've got a far better chance of avoiding it altogether as the rape rate per capita in India is double what it is here in the States. This doesn't even take into account the risk of diseases like HIV which run rampant in South Africa.

What I said isn't meant to make your fears sound illegitimate, but this is one of the best countries to live in if you are a female. I would hope you appreciate that.
