Russian Mother Pleads for Son to Stay in Guantanamo

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian mother said that conditions in Russian jails are so awful that she would prefer her son remain in the "humane" conditions of the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay.



A number of governments, including Russia's, are in talks with the United States to extradite their nationals from the prison camp in Cuba, which was set up to house Taliban and al Qaeda suspects after the war in Afghanistan (news - web sites).


"I am terribly scared of a Russian prison or Russian court for my son," Amina Khasanova was quoted as saying by Gazeta newspaper on Friday.


"At Guantanamo they treat him humanely, the conditions are fine."


Her son Andrei Bakhitov is one of eight Russian detainees, and the newspaper quoted a letter he wrote to his mother.


"I think that there is not even a health resort in Russia on the level of this place," the letter said.

Again, none of this matters. We are the United States, and therefore we should set higher standards for human rights than other countries. Regardless of how our POW's are treated, how our soldiers are burried, or what some other people might do in our shoes, we should NEVER sink to the level of Russia, China, Iraq, ISRAEL, or any other chronic offender of human rights. By the way, I'm not saying this is how it is, just the way it should be.

I'm not completely disagreeing with you. But you were implying that people shouldn't complain about Guantanimo because things are bad in Russia, and I am saying that it doesn't matter how bad things are in Russia or anywhere else. We still have an obligation to set a higher standard and a right to question our leaders if this standard is lowered.

How are we supposed to know what constitutes a higher standard without comparing it to other countries? If Gitmo is better than Russian prisons, doesn't that in and of itself prove that Gitmo is a higher standard than Russia?
