Alright... Somehow my hotmail is sending out messages to all kinds of people with the infected file "details.pif" and I'm getting like 10 emails per day returned to me with this included attachment that were rejected.

I've never opened this attachment, however I did the mcafee file scanning thing on details.pif and it is, in fact, the sobig virus. I'm curious though... how in the hell is hotmail sending it to all these other people from my email address? And how do I set hotmail to quit recieving it?

I'm not infected with the file either... I've checked.

I read a post somewhere else about people's hotmail sending out this virus .... you don't happen to use outlook to access your hotmail do you???

Other than that, maybe someone elses computer that is infected with the virus sent out a hundred copies of it and randomlly selected your email as the return address. That's how most of these work.

Another computer is infected and it is forging your address as the 'from' address. You receive the bouncebacks, but you never sent anything.

they always complain about my Sobig attachment,too, because it is always infiltrating private areas and even though they warn them not to they can never resist seeing what is inside.

Not their desctructive side naturally, but just how amazingly fast they are able to compromise systems...


5 years ago, we toyed over the idea of writing a worm like virus, that would be platform independant and embed itself into the boot loader of a machine and execute as phantom threads...

and it would rely on contact with other virus/worms to learn information about other target machines, patches, etc.

That information could be fed out via anonymous POP mailers, so every now and then you could feed information into the distributed network and it would just propagate out...

then from there, you could have a whole distributed network at your finger tips... you could use it to coordinate DoS attacks or whatever else...
