![]() | HIV vaccine trials start in South Africa http://www.sabcnews.com/south_africa...,68437,00.html HIV vaccine trials start in SA November 03, 2003, 03:30 PM The South African Aids Vaccine Initiative (Saavi) has announced the start of two separate HIV vaccine trials in South Africa. Addressing a press conference in Johannesburg today, Tim Tucker, a Saavi director, said phase one of the clinical trial of the Alpha Vax would commence in Johannesburg and Durban next week and would assess the safety and immune system responses induced by the new vaccine. Alpha Vax is one of two vaccines approved earlier this year for phase one testing by the Medicines Control Council. The second trial involves a modified vaccinia ankara sponsored by the International Aids Vaccine Initiative which will also commence in the next few weeks. Estyhia Vardas, an HIV researcher said 55 volunteers would participate in the South African trials. She said the vaccines were already undergoing testing in the United Kingdom and Kenya. Vardas said the South African tests would also help establish dosage as well as the best way to administer the vaccine. Saavi was established as a public-private partnership in 1999 in order to find a vaccine for HIV/Aids. - Sapa

I have heard other vaccine trials have been conducted with high risk groups which have proven to be helpful - have you any info on this? Any and all steps forward in finding a vaccine or cure are good news.

There's a lot of good articles on the New Scientist website about recent discoveries on how the virus hides itself and agents that can see through their human sugar disguise, but I didn't realize they had already began producing prototype vaccines yet until I read this article...

africa really needs this like they needed the malaria programs and the smallpox programs. its estimated that in some countries of africa that like 60% of the adult population is HIV/AIDS infected. in a continent already stricken with war and poverty, experts all agree that there will be a generation of children raised with no adult supervision cause they all died of the diseasse. great, like a handfull of 8 year olds with AK's was bad, immagine an entire dying contenent full of psychotic 25 year olds, diseased with no hope of long life, all armed to the teeth.......... |

Most leftest ideology is based upon the idea that evil is the result of social conditions/injustice, and simple misunderstandings. Man's nature is seen as both inherently good and infinitely malleable. It is believed that man can be made into something better through education and other social endeavors. The truth is that human nature is not inherently good and neither is terribly changable. Any system that denies the truth about human nature will be the victim of it. Communism is only one of the more horrific examples of this fundamental truth. I understand why you're a socialist. You want to make the world a better place. What you need to understand is that not everyone can be helped and those who can are best served by providing them with the opportunity to help themselves.
