death rates in iraq

a friend who resides on the left sent me this link:

http://www.bushflash.com/ma.html

i was wondering if anyone knows if these statistics are correct..

i understand this flash is extremely subjective with its use emotive anger but i'm more concerned with it's numbers..

Well, at one point it said 1.9 die a day then followed it with at this rate 2,400 will die over the next year.

1.9 a day x 365 days = 693.5 dead.

Actually upon viewing it again they're using the number from the 1st 2 weeks of Ramadan where by their count 74 soldiers have died. Even if you use that number(which is prone to a larger margin of error due to being over a much shorter period of time) you're still talking about 1924 which is 500 less than their estimate.

Their estimates on the Iraqi civilians dead are far from certain mainly because *nobody* has been able to make an accurate count. Saying that 23 Iraqi civilians died for every 1 soldier dead is at best an estimate and at worst blatantly false. I'm sure there have been Iraqi civilian deaths, but until someone can do an accurate census of the dead there's no reason to throw out random numbers.

I'd say you are better off going to sites like CNN/Yahoo/DoD to look up accurate figures on the numbers of dead & wounded.

you're right..

i was wondering how much license they took in creating something that as far as i’m concerned speaks more to blind antagonism than to actual documentation of this 'war'..

i think what enrages me further is that people obviously send these links to others hoping they will be receptive to 'like-minded' accounts and justification..

thank you

Here's a basic counter of American casualties:

http://www.antiwar.com/ewens/casualties.html

It's purely from news and media reports though, so there could be many many more.

The 2,400 prediction could be true, or could be badly underestimated, considering this war will escalate at an astounding rate when people start realizing that it's serious.

440 US Soldiers dead as of today - as far as I'm concerned, that's pretty serious.

One dead is serious. Is the prize worth the costs is the question.

What prize would that be?

indeed - an obvious criticism of the adventure - lack of both clear definition and strategy to accomplish it.

As my brother who is currently at home from Iraq on two weeks leave put it, "I'm not sure why the hell we're there, but we'd better accept that we're not leaving any time soon."

Black Ops aside, the US government is generally pretty accurate in their tallies of US dead and wounded.

2,400 is more than a bit high considering we've been fighting in Iraq for ~9 months and we are just now at 440(442 actually). That's a rate of roughly 1.63 US military a day if you include the major combat at the beginning of the war that equates to about 595 a year. It would take a 500% increase in daily casualties to make 2400 a year.

Who doesn't think the situation in Iraq is serious? That aside, in what way do you think the war would escalate beyond the (relatively) minor guerilla attacks that have been happening for the last couple months?

Iraq is a wasteland of corpses to be blunt and there's no reason for it to quit.

It is under the CPA rule, it was during the war and it was under Saddam's rule...

Iraq is a graveyard... I can't imagine how hard it is going to be to ressurect it... under any rule.
