ROME (Reuters) - Cocaine and ecstasy not only cause addiction and raise the risk of cancer but also provoke genetic mutations, Italian scientists said Friday.

"Cocaine and ecstasy have proved to be more dangerous than we had imagined," said Giorgio Bronzetti, chief scientist at the National Center for Research's (CNR) biotechnology department.

"These drugs, on top of their toxicological effects, attack DNA provoking mutations and altering the hereditary material. This is very worrying for the effects it could have on future generations," he said.

The use of ecstasy, a drug popular at all-night dance parties, increased by 70 percent between 1995 and 2000 according to a United Nations (news - web sites) report published in September.

Ecstasy and amphetamines have overtaken cocaine and heroin as the fastest growing global narcotics menace, the study said.

The CNR report, which took more than three years to complete, said animal tests had shown a direct relationship between ecstasy and cocaine intake and the effects on DNA.

"In other words, the longer the time frame of drug consumption, the greater the damage to DNA," Bronzetti said.

this argument was made about LSD - that it corrupts your DNA.

The defeat of the argument was the fact that one could not test for such mutations. Have new tests been developed that permit a determination that these specific drugs directly cause DNA mutation? Or do we simply have some guys saying that it is so?

Actually...I want kids. And do I mind if they partake in Cocaine or Ecstacy? Yes...if it's in an irresponible manner.

If they wish to know, I will educate them on the effects...both positive and negative. Just as I would about sex. Or about alcohol.

I'd be more worried if they felt that they couldn't talk to me about stuff like that. Cause then I'd have to worry about who they are getting their information from and if they were in trouble because of it that they wouldn't tell me because they would be afraid. Would I ever feed my kids a pill? Oh hell no. Not in a million years.

I would like to think that they would feel comfortable around me if they wanted to try it.

I dont want kids.....but i'll probably have them someday just b/c that seems the "normal" thing to do

I REALLY dont want my kids to do any of those things, but i plan on very clearly letting them know my experiences with the drugs, and the consequences i now suffer because of it. (which my parents had no clue about...all they ever did was smoke a little weed). I will hope my kids will have more common sense than i did, and the can see ahead that the consequences outweighs the benefits.

If i could take all my drug usage back for the mental/emotional stability i had, i would do it in a heartbeat.

i almost feel the same way to a point...

except that my drug usage...gave me MORE mental/ emotional stability....

I guess it's just where you get the information from and who you were around when you decided to plug that pill...or inhale the blow

I have heard that countless hours spent on the ddm can cause horrific genetic mutations as well as a warped sense of reality.
