![]() | Chairman Calls on Democrat Candidates to Repudiate Ad Comparing Bush to Hitler
More evidence that we live in a country where one's own integrity is no longer used to combat a political opponant, but rather hitting them below the belt with outright vulgar slanders... An ad like this doesn't help much to gain more support against the republican incumbent, but rather it causes a hate fueled rift dividing people further left and further right, instead of encouraging them to over to the other side... It fuels the leftist digust with the President to use more and more vulgar tactics like this to drive a point, but it also infuriates more rightists into believing that the left is just a bunch of hateful propagandists and therefore reinforces their position to vote for the incumbent... as well as turn a deaf ear to anything the democratic opponants might say... Political ads have always been crafty and will bring out tidbits here and there to make the public think... but I feel ads are starting to blow way out of proportion when we compare U.S. leadership to mass murdering dictators... Ads like this only drive hate.... not reason... I wouldn't be surprised if the next crap political ad that comes out compares left paid programming the equilavent to Goebbel's media control over Germany... For Immediate Release January 4, 2004 Contact: Christine Iverson 202-329-5024 Chairman Calls on Democrat Candidates to Repudiate Ad Comparing Bush to Hitler Washington, DC-Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie today called on the nine Democrat presidential candidates to repudiate an ad posted on the Moveon.org website comparing President George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. A transcript of the ad is below. To view the ad click on the following link: http://www.rnc.org/movemonvideo.htm "This is the worst and most vile form of political hate speech. These candidates have a chance to repudiate this pollution of our political process by repudiating these ads at this afternoon’s debate in Iowa," Gillespie said. Gillespie discussed the ad this morning on Fox News Sunday. Gillespie’s comments are below: GILLESPIE: If you look at some of these outside groups that are coming together to defeat the president, they will spend over $1 million a day next year to defeat him. One of those groups is a group called MoveOn.org, a group that, after September 11th, said we shouldn't respond in a military fashion, that we should just take diplomatic means to address this tragic occurrence and this terrorist strike. But they have been running an ad selection campaign on their Web site, and one of the ads that was submitted that they considered viable for airing -- with $7 million, by the way, in funds that we don't know where it comes from, but we know they've said they'd spend $7 million to air the ad that they've settled on -- one of them morphed President Bush into Adolf Hitler. That's the kind of tactics we're seeing on the left today in support of these Democratic presidential candidates. GILLESPIE: Every Democrat in the debate tonight ought to repudiate that tactic. Complete bullshit. And by that, I'm talking about the RNC even bringing this up. The ad was submitted as a part of the Bush in 30 Seconds contest, for random people to submit their own ads. The public and a board of celebrity judges vote on these ads, and then the top few ads will get airtime. Its the basic equivalent of the DNC doing a google search on "howard dean america hating terrorist", and then demanding that Bush call out whoever wrote the first response. Of course, in tradtional contemporary conservative fashion, its never mentioned what the source of this ad is beyond moveon.org, and as such has a implicit implication that this is somehow supported by the DNC. There's a lot of good ads on the Bushin30seconds site, so its not like every ad on the site compares Bush to Hitler. |

the difference is that these ads are airing on a website moveon.org that is endorsed by key dems, including al gore. If moveon does not endorse the ad then why is it streaming across the website......i'm sure they claim it as an OOPS. BS |

It was not a matter of fair or unfair but of bad taste - Mr. Boyd admits as such. MoveOn clearly didn't display all entries in its ad contest - which means MoveOn chose to display distatesful ads and when called on it they tried to backtrack and disclaim. | |

It just really grosses me out to see GWB compared to the most maniacal mass murderer in history. And then people sit on the board and talk about being fair to the ads creator and giving it fair air time. These ads are garbage, and arguing otherwise is weak.

I agree, the ad is in poor taste. However, calling on the candidates to condemn the ad is a bit ridiculous. If they are going to, they will, if not, then they won't. I suspect that it's the DLC trying to test Dean to see if they can destroy his credibility if he refuses to condemn the ad. MoveOn may be "endorsed" by some democrats, but it doesn't mean that they endorse all of their actions. I endorse my employer as a good employer, but that doesn't mean I think they always do our customers right.
