Death Penalty/Abortion

Ok, so recently I've been doing some reading about abortions, and it occured to me there are a lot of people that are for the death penalty and against abortion, and vice versa.

If you are for one and against the other, why?

I know, but I figured that this might be a good subject for other people to comment on too.

I support the death penalty under certain conditions and with certain protections against abuse. Death is the ultimate sanction and must be reserved for those few extraordinary cases deserving of that sanction.

Morally I object to abortion as a method of birth control.

Medically I believe the procedure should be available to women who need them for health reasons.

Because I cannot know the motive a woman has for having an abortion I cannot support a ban on abortions. They should be legal.

I make an exception for Partial Birth Abortions I can see no reason why a baby should be partially delivered and killed under the prmise that it is to save the life of the mother - I am inclined to believe that continuing the delivery will present no additional risks to the mother, may quite likely be faster and therefore reduce the risks.

That's pretty much my thoughts on abortion.

That we should blatantly ignore treaties we've signed?

No - the question was - do you support or oppose the death penalty.

The topic was not how the treaty you refer to impacts that opinion.

As far as the Human Rights Charter you refer to.....

the options are that either

1) we disregard provisions that call for a ban on the death penalty (and i don't recall seeing that provision in it - not saying it isn't there - but I don't recall seeing it) and are in violation of the treaty

2) we carved out an exception in the treaty before ratifying (I don't even know if the treaty has been signed and ratified)

3) the treaty has been superceded by subsequent legislation

did I miss any options?

I really don't care which of the three Adam. You know what I think of anything that comes from the UN.

I posted this sometime last year.......

I'm sticking by my guns.
----------------------------------------------------------

I am thoroughly AGAINST the death penalty. I do not feel we have the right to end someones life and then create this double standard that if you kill someone - "Hey, we'll just go ahead & murder you as well!!"

I have had this discussion with my parents before, & I let them know if something was to ever happen to me - even if I was brutally murdered, I asked them to NOT seek the death penalty for the person(s) convicted. Hopefully they would get the life in prison without the possibility of parole - cause even if they have access to cable,drugs,etc.....the fact is,they would still be stuck there behind those crummy walls for a good while.

Now here is where it get's strange........I am thoroughly Pro-Choice. I myself would never have an abortion, but the same concept goes that I don't feel that anyone should have the right to tell someone else what to do with THEIR body. True, the woman would be ending a life, same as the state putting someone to death but......I just think you get into a whole different ballgame with this one, & it could go on forever!!!!!

This is the option.

No, it's universal.

Possibly, but I think you have a position of treaty vs. law or state constitution. I'm not sure how that's resolved.

Eh, abortion is a personal choice. People should think it through CAREFULLY before making the decision towards it.

The death penalty I don't believe should be carried out in any situation. I don't believe it is our right as human beings to determin any other human beings fate.

And yes, I would feel the same if it was my brother that was murdered and the murderer was on trial.

I do however, believe in sentencing someone to life in prison.
