![]() | FS: Reggie Zeno's UREI 1620LE
We bought a couple of these a little over a year ago. The one for sell is new in the box, never used. It's still in the original box and plastic. One of the best mixers ever made. $1200 and it goes to the family for medical costs.

The sound quality is unmatched, very warm. Make no mistake, it can't really be compared with their other products but you'd know that if you'd used one before. | |

I happen to own an original 1620 and have had the chance to A/B it with the 1620 LE, same records, same levels. The LE sounds NOTHING like the original. The LE is cold and harsh compared to the warmth of the original 1620. Yea, sure the back side of the mixer is a bit cleaner with the various in's and out's compared to the original. To say that the LE is the same, or better is a far from true. The pots (knobs) are lower grade "Blue Velvet" 27mm ALPS with plastic body wheras the originals are "Black Beauty" 40mm ALPS with metal body; resistors on the LE are cheap low-grade metal film and original are warm, mil-spec carbon film resistors. The LE also has power-protection that can and will shut down the mixer. The fuses that get it up and running are NOT shown in the manual. The switches on the new one for headphone cue/pgm are poor quality compared to the original. UREI, an American company founded by the Beach Boys producer, Bill Putnam, handmade the original 1620 in California where as the LE model is made in China. The design of the mixer was a collaboration with Larry Levan, of Paradise Garage fame, and Richard Long, designer of the sound system at Paradise Garage, many claim to be the best sound system that had ever been built in a night club. The advantage to the design of the LE is that it can be retrofitted with original parts that the 1620 had and it can be made more true to the real deal. I have a friend in LA that is one of the few guys on the planet that does this kind of work. www.duo-audio.com is his webpage. He is true to form and knows what he is doing. He makes line level cards that can be dropped into either the 1620 or the LE that boosts the line levels to match the output of the phono cards. If you want additional phono cards you can also get them from him as well. So if you are considering getting this mixer, there are options out there to get that UREI sound, not the Soundcraft sound.

The potentiometers are an updated design, same company that made them before, as you mentioned. ALPS. Actually they made all the switches, and jacks. All the connectors are now gold, and you can now run a balanced connection in the back. The old model was unbalanced, and booth only. I'm well versed on who did what with it, and what year. I've used both, old and new, and I like the new one. The sound is warm and on par with the old one. The circuitry and layout is identical, and it's suppose to be more reliable. If you've had your old one "beefed up" or reworked, then you'll be biased because you have an original. I'm also not on here trying to promote anyone or do anything else. In my opinion it has been beefed up in certain areas and the people I know that are using them haven't had any problems yet. I think they did a good job recreating the piece. YMMV. |
