Paul is best known in Dallas for having one of the longest running weekly parties called Select @ The Ruby Room & Red Jacket where sets by DJ greats such as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, DJ Heather and Diz were a standard. In 2002, Paul moved to California to focus on his career as a music producer and started releasing singles under the name “Midas” , his San Diego based production trio with Scott Pace & Thomas Sahs and as the Dallas based group “Lavish Habits” with Mike Constantino and vocalist Red Eye. With over a dozen releases in the last 2003, Paul has gained International recognition as a producer. His early releases granted him great response from top djs & producers around the world. Mark Farina stated in DJ mag that the Midas EP was "Best Record of the WMC" with the standout track being one from Lavish Habits. After recently returning from a tour in Australia & New Zealand , Paul is back in Texas working on a Lavish Habits album and a full schedule of original material & remixes for artists such as Brett Johnson, Vernon & DaCosta and the Lil' Beasties. ^sean anderson^ Sean was a 7-year Dj veteran of the vibrant Dallas electronic music scene and an avid guitar player and jazz enthusiast. Sean’s love of the intricacies of tech house and older electro evolved into the Grey project with partner Eric Reeves that focuses more on warm atmospheres and quirky embellishments. Grey's first collaborative project came over a year later when Chicago-based titan Guidance Recordings released the “Solid Foundations EP”, debuting the duo’s four-track diversity. Shortly after followed another project by the two, to be released on their own Harmonious Discord imprint in November of 2003 called “N(ua)ghty Glances”. In addition to the focused group projects, the future of the Grey collaboration is forthcoming releases on labels like Chalant, Fair Park, and Frick n’ Frack as well as many more releases on the Harmonious Discord label leave little time for looking back as the project continues with force and drive to provide a different shade of music to a thriving medium. ^john walker^ Even after being introduced to the underground dance culture in 1994, it wasn't until after his relocation to Dallas in 1997 that he discovered his love for house music. That next year he and his roomate would purchase their first set of Technics, and soon after he was dj'ing around town under the moniker "turn@round". His energy behind the decks along with a little help from a few close friends pushed him into the limelight and by the end of 2001 he was headlining gigs overseas. The next couple of years were spent holding down several of Dallas' most respected weeklies, playing alongside some of the most influential names in house music today. 2004 started off with Mr. Walker shifting gears to producer, releasing his debut album, "the turnaround ep" on Fair Park Recordings. The release was a success, receiving heavy rotation from jocks all over, as well as a positive write up in XLR8R magazine. ^treewave^ Treewave is a two piece band from Texas that make electronic songs using obsolete computer and video game equipment as instruments. Paul Slocum codes the music primarily on an Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Compaq 286, and Epson dot matrix printer, and Lauren Gray adds lush vocals. During performances, Tree Wave's Atari and C64 code outputs programmed visuals that are synchronized to the music. Video output from the Atari is displayed on a video projector, and the Commodore's video is shown on a television. The printer is also used live and prints patterns while playing rhythmic and melodic parts of the songs. The music is probably more organic than you'd expect from the instrumentation. For fans of Morr Music, MBV, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, old-skool Flowchart, etc etc. Although definitely electronic sounding, the music is influenced more by guitar based bands and experimental music than dance. ISAN is a fan too! "it isn't the bleep and bloop-fest you might expect, it is really quite lush...." ^sona^ Sona has only been spinning for four years, but he is quickly and aggressively making his mark on the Dallas/Fort Worth scene and beyond. his unique style of blending sultry downtempo with upbeat trip hop tunes is catching the attention of club goers and promoters all over the United States and beyond. His club gigs have included various venues in Dallas, Sake on 6th in Austin, The Underground in Kansas, Le Fabrique in Tokyo, and MIKL in Kyoto. His musical influences include Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, DJ Heather, Phil Weeks. His current affiliations are with Grin Music and De Greenhouse Productions. He is most definitely one of Dallas' finest dj's, and will be a household name in the years to come. ^mustafa^ Mustafa was introduced into the dance subculture in 1988. After that, he was dancing 'til dawn at the after-hour acid house loft spaces and warehouses. From that point on he always kept his ear to the ground for the unmistakable pulse of the underground. Shortly thereafter, he went on to contribute to events for 13 different promotion Crews in this city over a period of years (Hazy Daze, Purple Dimension, True Family, Jumble Tribe, Mixtec, Valence, Full Circle, Protoype, Glass Bead Players). It was during a period of heavy visual activity as "Professor Wrinklescreen" that Mustafa began to spin in chill-out areas. These were usually found outdoors during festival events. “Used to, a chill out space was mandatory for a party, legal or otherwise. You needed a place to depressurize properly and socialize. There was a greater respect for other types of electronic music back then. And when I say ‘electronic music’ I don’t just mean electronic DANCE music. Now, the only time you get that downtempo sound is when you play outdoors, i.e., when the promoter can afford a second system financially and spatially.” The works of Bill Laswell and Coil influence him the most. Just between those two artistic behemoths there are hundreds of releases spanning 20 + years utilizing state of the art technology with a deeply Gnostic esthetic. Mustafa’s sound was said to have as many admirers as it did detractors. His usage of noise or unconventional musical structures was felt to be anathema by many beat-driven kids, but the sheer oddness of the track selection paired with a real sensitivity to the music being played also gained him a handful of admirers amongst the more experienced promoters and audience members. He plays precisely what he wants and never regrets it. "I cater to the audience every time I play, just not to what they want. I cater to what they should understand and don’t – that the Universe is musical and the standard four on the floor fascist groove thang just don’t cut it in my visioning of that Universe.’" However vocal he was about dance music, Mustafa could be found at most parties dancing the night away. "Any beast can fuck, but it takes a real human to cultivate those passions into something life-changing. This refinement of baser elements, a common theme in alchemy, is sadly absent in most of our culture. The events we throw are a means by which we can retrieve this function and make it happen for our guests and friends.” - mustafa d.verz MESMERIZE saturday june 25 10 pm - 4 am 2 floors of MUSIC: house on the floor Paul Paredes [select, midas] John Walker [stompy, fairpark] Sean Anderson [hd, guidance, moonmagnet] downtempo upstairs Treewave (live p.a.)
