this is a quote... "Elitism, I believe, has been the main reason why electronic music isnt as big as it was during 97 to 2001. This is the kind of thing going on in (Anytown USA) and has been since about 02. DJs, most of whom were once ravers, put themselves above most of the new ravers then ridiculed them getting trashed at the shows. Yet this entire industry was built on people getting trashed. I guess in an attempt to make "candy ravers" feel shamed into changing, the elitists complained that these kids were "killing the scene". But by ridicule and insult they eliminated an entire section of the demographic. The shows moved to clubs where the few younger patrons paid extra to get in because they couldn't support the bar by buying drinks. This is assuming they are allowed in the building at all. This is the only business where new customers are penalized. How does an industry survive when you do not give new customers any incentive to see for themselves how great this music actually is. This business will continue to stagnate as long as new customers aren't attracted. The other reason was the promoters. They usually made sure never to do a show on the same night as some other promoter. What this does is limits supply and keeps prices artificially high. It also keeps competition out meaning promoters can do mediocre shows and charge a lot for it. This also limits the supply of local talent spots to be filled causing DJs to agree to play for very little, for free, or attempt throw their own low-budget shows usually at small clubs where, like I said earlier, penalize you for being 17-20." wise words....in my dot dot opinion.... very well spoken. i concur wholeheartedly. it's indeed an issue that goes unresolved. however, those that are truly interested in it will find it. that's the way it was before the interweb. i akin this board to be an expanded online version of the old zedan phone line. i'm almost of the mind that whoever's left today are the true music lovers. and honestly, i don't care if the music becomes as big as it did. this is underground music for a reason. i'm hot and cold on the whole issue of "getting this music big again". i'm leaning today toward keeping it underground. and too, i'll admit that i enjoyed in the past knowing promoters worked their schedules around each other's events. you wouldn't get what happened last friday night nearly as often. there was a lot going on that night. would have been nice to spread it out to be able to rightfully attend each event in sequence rather than tire yourself out by jumping from one party to the next on the same night.

Crumbs, hammer,WTF!!!!! Allen you kill me Bro ............I have to say coming from a rural area into the metroplex 6 years ago. I really notice when people make ass's out of themselves by trying to place themselves on pedistool's above all others.....just because they 've been "doing this longer". I have found this type of behavior totally turns off newcomers to the music.

The elitism argument sounds to me like a rant by a bitter ex-candykid. Elitism exists throughout the entertainment industry, but you don't see rock fans complaining about how "the scene" is being killed by 40-somethings making fun of high schoolers going to their first parties. Then again, those kids aren't wearing day-glo angel wings and 28 pounds of mardis gras beads. As for why the shows moved to clubs, that's simple; legitimate clubs don't get raided by SWAT teams and shut down at 11:00pm. Ask any of the Covert Ops/32 Degrees guys about the differences in planning a party at a warehouse and one at Trees, it's night and day. Clubs are popular because they have built-in infrastructure(bathrooms, bars, sound systems, etc.) and the promoters don't have to deal with the threat of being shut down early. It's easier to pull off the party when you don't have to worry about some 17-year-old in a Vicks mask ODing in the back of the warehouse you rented. This isn't to say the clubs are the perfect solution; but after the Dallas PD started their "rave unit" in the mid-90s and were busting every party they could get their hands on, the clubs are a more viable solution to throwing successful events. It was almost at the point where it was clubs(the days of Decibel & the DMC notwithstanding) or nothing at all.
