Here's a little background on a guy from Austin, TX who has
been making some serious moves this past year.

The Best International Newcomer category is one to watch for future stars, not just because the producers are newcomers but also because they're international. Separated from the birthplace of the scene, by geography if not in spirit, they have the opportunity to forge their own unique identity, indebted to their influences and surroundings. Finland's Tes La Rok was a surprise runner up in the category but tunes like "Gunshot" show evidence of the kinds of Coki-cloning that decimated the scene's quality control in 2006.

More original is Parson (download Tracktor Pull mix here). His style might be exactly the kind of warping dark halfstep you'd expect from Youngsta or Hench, but it's saved by a Texan twist. Screwed and chopped hip-hop vocals give Parson a uniquely U.S. flavor-- essential if he's to add to the healthy momentum that he generated for himself in 06..

2006 saw a massive expansion of interest in the sound. Building on the success of Skream's 2005 grimey anthem 'Midnight Request Line,' the hype around the DMZ night and support from online forums and bloggers, the scene exploded after Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs gathered the cream of the scene together for one show, entitled 'Dubstep Warz.' The effect was to create a massive new audience for the scene, both in the UK and worldwide, after years of underground hard graft. 'Dubstep Warz' was so successful that some of the tracks were released on a Planet Mu compilation in October 2006, entitled Warrior Dubz.

In addition to this, recent productions of artists such as Parson have been adding the screwed and chopped sound of the stateside underground to a definitively atmospheric and often sinister vibe; in doing so have put the Texas Dubstep scene on the international map.
