![]() | Interview with DJ Spinderella
Here is a a little interview with DJ Spinderella from The Boston Globe in 2006. --------------------------------------- Hanging With: Spinderella By Meredith Goldstein, Globe staff | July 7, 2006 Spinderella and her DJ partner Mo' Dave are doing what they do all day long -- ribbing each other relentlessly. Spin, best known as the lady behind the turntables for the 1980 and '90s rap group Salt-N-Pepa, is sitting with Dav in WaterWorks' exposed VIP lounge above the outdoor stage on Monday, waiting to do a sound check in oppressive heat. ``This one's going to go rapido," she says of her set at that night's old-school hip-hop show hosted by JAM'N 94.5, also featuring Tone-Loc, Biz Markie, and Digital Underground. Spin and Dav, longtime friends and hosts of the syndicated radio show ``The Backspin," are opening the show. She'll spin a medley of tunes while he pumps up the crowd on the mike. ``What's your DJ mantra?" he asks, pretending to be a reporter. ``Stop using those big words," Spin, 34, shoots back. ``You should play your verse in `Shoop,' " he says, trying to help with the playlist. ``I don't have a verse in `Shoop,' " she snaps. ``I have a verse in `Whatta Man.' " Dav doesn't bat an eye at the reprimand from his stylish and sweet-faced boss, who's dressed in gold wedge heels, embroidered capri jeans, and a pageboy cap. ``She's very overbearing," he says sarcastically. Spinderella (a.k.a. Deidre LaToya Roper) rolls her eyes. From below, a man helping with the sound system yells up that he wants to cook for Spin. ``He's flirting," Spin tells me, then yells down to him, ``What are you cooking?" ``Whatever you're eating," he says. ``Shrimp? Salmon?" ``Salmon? I've never grilled salmon," he says, looking flustered. ``It's good," she says, then shifts her focus like she's lost interest. Spin and Dave head down to the stage, where Spin is surrounded by men hooking up the DJ equipment she's used and watch evolve since the 1980s. A few of them make the mistake of trying to explain things to her. They tell her they can't hook up the Pioneer Effects Box she requested because there's no place onstage for it. Spin raises her voice and demands that they figure out a way to hook up the box. Dav tries to tells her she can do without it, but she's not having it. ``I don't want to be minimized," she says. ``I want to do what I need to do." Then she adds: ``That's why we are where we are right now. Because I get it." Maybe this is her DJ mantra, even if she doesn't know it. (Later she explains that she probably won't even use the equipment she was fighting for, but that's not the point. Everyone else got what they asked for. Why shouldn't she? ) The man who has never grilled salmon comes over and introduces himself. ``I know you're real aggressive right now, but I like aggressive," he says. ``Can I get a picture with you?" Spin obliges. She and Dav ride back to the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, where they clean up and jump back in the car to return to WaterWorks. Spin reminds Dav that he's supposed to plug their radio show during the set. He practices. ``Sunday nights, Boston, 8 to 10, 94.5, `The Backspin,' " he says, in a bellow he only uses onstage and on the air. Spin's laptop is open, her cursor quickly moving over her playlist. Her iTunes catalog features some new hits, but mostly it's classics by artists such as MC Lyte, the Beastie Boys, and the Beatnuts. She plays a little of Salt-N-Pepa's ``Expression" before she gets out of the car and is escorted to the stage. At about 8:15, with the sun setting over the water, the crowd assembles to see the pioneering female DJ hit the turntables. Mo' Dav ignites the audience with the usual rap directives -- ``Wave your hands," ``Jump around," ``Dance." His whipsmart boss, a mom from Brooklyn, an entrepreneur in heels, puts her hands on her equipment and spins. After finishing her set, Spin leans over the WaterWorks deck, her head facing the water, and takes a moment to breathe. She slips off her heels and shrinks by about 3 inches. She sticks around to watch a few of the other acts from the VIP lounge. Slowly, headliners Tone-Loc, the boys of Black Sheep, and Digital Underground take over the lounge with their entourages and scantily clad fans. Shock-G, frontman for Digital Underground, offers me an electric blue shot in a plastic test tube and asks me to sing with him while Loc's friends ravage buckets of KFC. Spin escapes with Dav just as the place turns into a full-on boys' club. © Copyright 2006 Globe Newspaper Compan
