this new ploy was probably ushered in by the real estate developers who are friendly with the city. the SUP permits will effect EVERY tattoo parlor, bar & nightclub in Downtown, Deep Ellum and Fair Park. I wish I had access to myspace, because i have a link there in my bulletin from last night that shows the developer's sketch of the new & improved Deep Ellum. It looks a lot like the overpriced Mockingbird Station. this is not a drill people. if the owners don't file & pay up before December, they are shut down. see it is in the developers best interest to nudge all the current businesses out so it will be less trouble to bulldoze the old neighborhood. someone has been lobbying the city zoning board & it wasn't us. hmmmmm.... perhaps its time for mama to dig up some digits for your frantic fingers to harrass...

This city is one of the largest in the country and should celebrate its diversity. The SUP permits must be filed by Wednesday, Sept. 19 and will be voted on by council Dec. 12. Requiring new special use permits by businesses like nightclubs, bars and tattoo parlors has been in effect for 14 months however insufficient action were taken by property owners or the city to inform these effected businesses. This relatively new policy is suspect since it (1) doesn’t apply to all bars, nightclubs and tattoo parlors in the entire city of Dallas (including Uptown, Greenville Avenue, etc.) but focuses on Downtown, Deep Ellum and Fair Park areas; (2) seems suspiciously in favor of property owners at the sacrifice of small locally owned businesses when we consider the lack of early publicity, official notification to tenants and the like. Since the real estate lobby seems to be the only voice heard by council on this matter, we the voters of Dallas are choosing to exercise our right to freedom of speech to dissent this policy before it is too late. Through the grace of Freedom of Information, we have found out about the new policies involving special use permits in addition to the names of the government officials who were voted or appointed to represent the best interest of the city of Dallas. We will continue to voice our dissent until a public forum is held to discuss this matter that includes not only the property owners and government officials, but the effected tenants as well. It is our sincere desire that the council recognize the right of small businesses to continue their livelihoods. The nature of these businesses may not be conservative, but they pay sales taxes regularly that encourage the growth of our city. If these businesses are closed en masse after December, Dallas will lose the bulk of its entertainment districts and the tourist appeal of music for the common man. These policies will send the three effected neighborhoods the way of West End, which has given up its entertainment value for the development of overpriced multi-family dwellings.”

tell them you are a voter. - tell them you don't think SUP's are fair to local businesses -let them know tenants were not informed that they fell under new SUP rules. -let them know the property owners found it easier to call architects to draft new plans for the neighborhoods then work with local businesses already paying sales taxes. - tell them SUP's favor land developers and out of state corporate chains (guess who will populate the new & improved districts) -ask them to please vote against destroying these neighborhoods (i listen to the council meetings on WRR sometimes. they were talking about changing the one way streets downtown for new development. this old school councilman (god i wish i remembered his name) says "so is this a one time street change or have you considered how they will work AFTER the rail is laid out. the developers & councilmen working for the street changes were like wtf....um uh no we didn't think about long term. then our buddy says "well i'm not voting for it till you developers get with dart, do the studies & get back to us with the results.) did dallas learn NOTHING from the s&l scandals? didn't an empty downtown for 2o years teach them anything at all??
