I saw another story where a guy was given four years for having a microscopic piece of weed on the bottom of his shoe. They have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy in Dubai, and they don't fuck around. There was also an incident with another passenger who had 3 poppy seeds on him from a muffin he had for breakfast at Heathrow Airport. He also got prison time...

I understand that the ramifications in certain parts of the world are much harsher than here in the US and i know that it is up to the traveler to understand these consequences, but four years for a couple of grams of pot is ridiculous and far from fitting

Sorry, but the guy is a dummy. He tried to sneak weed into a foreign country with harsh drug laws and he got caught.

Read what I wrote. I said I think the laws are too harsh. I am a NORML member and marijuana advocate. I've also made stupid mistakes in my past with drugs. I was punished and I took it because that's what the law was (not like I had a choice though ). Do I think marijuana laws are harsh? Hell yes. Everywhere in the world. However, I am not stupid enough to try to sneak weed into a country on my person. That makes him a dummy... and the dummy got what he deserved.

So trying to impose your system of values on another culture isn't arrogant and judgmental? Those are the laws that are in place there, and it's not like it was any big secret. Cultural relativism ftw...

Thank you for putting that in a manner that was not so arrogant and judgmental.

I know I come across that way at times. However, most people who actually know me will tell you I am not. I will not refrain from speaking my mind on a subject I am passionate about though.

I am the last person in the world to think someone should be arrested or prosecuted for marijuana. I think it should be legal everywhere. But it's not. And if you are going to attempt to defy the laws against Marijuana, then expect to be sentenced accordingly if you get caught. Period.

You guys are forgetting to mention that he also got caught with porn, which is also illegal to have in Dubai. Groove messed up I agree, especially when his manager specifically told him not to have anything on him. The punishment definetly doesn't fit the crime but when you know you're going to get in big trouble and still do it I have no sympathy. Believe me, I've been locked up and wouldn't wish that on anyone but if you broke the law you have to face the consequences. Anyways,

They scoff at our weak drug policy and millions of citizens who are addicted to drugs just like we scoff at them for sentencing someone to prison for 4 years for possession.
