Damn... I'm playing in New York City that night.

I'd like to show up and try to collect on Aaron Funk/Venetian Snares for the plane ticket he didn't use when I had him booked to play a show in Houston, and one up here at Sand Bar.

He called my ass an hour after the plane took of to tell me he was snowed in, but weather.com reported everything sunny in Winnipeg. He never even bothered to contact the Houston promoters who were supposed to meet him at the airport.

Later, he told some folks it was because we (as in the promoters from both cities) never paid a deposit... But the written agreement was for us to purchase his plane ticket only, then pay him X amount when he got here. Other times, he was quoted as saying that the Houston promoters who were supposed to drive him up for his Dallas show "seemed shady."

So no matter what he claims his reasons were for not boarding that plane, he had a contract to play that we had met the demands of, and we had purchased a ticket for him to board a plane come play a show... He didn't, and then tried to smear our faces with shit.

That makes him the turd in my book.

A friend from San Fran (Savak) flew in last minute to play Snares' spot on the bill, and BANKED between getting paid what Funk would have been paid PLUS selling a metric asston of merch. It added up to several hundred AFTER the expense of buying his own last minute ticket here.

I feel sorry for the kids that had driven out from Atlanta to see his show, though. We put out announcements as soon as we knew what was going on, but the Atlanta kids had already left for Dallas by the time we discovered Funk was not coming.

not surprising. Otto is a real ass munch as well. His music is gimicky bullshit. I met him in Detroit when he played with Richard Devine and Modeselektor and "turd" is a great word to describe him and his music. Shit, didn't he even make a track with nothin but farts? pleeeeeese. Speaker fisting, yay! Now Richard D and Modeselektor on the other hand....fukin rawked. NO COMPARISON. Richard came out after Otto's bullshit and owned his ass with a 303 and a 909. Don't be fooled by the noise, there's nothing special about it. They should put ATX local Nautilus (planet-mu) on the bill, he's good people and actually has musical talent.

and when i saw him, it was the sorriest excuse for a stage show ever - as in, there was no stage show, just a greezy crater faced dude hoped up on something screaming into a mic making garbage come out of his laptop.

Otto kicks mucho ass. Very punk Rawk electronic music. Venetian Snares Totally smokes him though. I love the fact that he rarely programs in 4/4. He loves doing odd time signatures. Something you don't get to hear enough of in enough electronic music.

Their music is crazy which makes it not so surprising that they are hard to do deal with on a personal or business basis. The crazy geniuses usually are pricks.

I have to get nit-picky with your wording there, Wanz (PS: good to see you round here).

I would say the crazy geniuses are OFTEN pricks, but I wouldn't say usually. After working with artists for close to a decade, I've found most have the basics of social & business skills down. It often seems that the "bigger" the band, the nicer and more cooperative they are (though this is strictly a generality.. There are definitely exceptions)

Its hard to climb the ladder to success, and maintain it, if you're a prick to too many people.... Regardless of talent.

Venetian Snares, after my experience, ranks in my top 5 of people who need an attitude readjustment. (The number one, after cussing out most of the audience at his show on a person-to-person basis, he broke my car window in the parking lot at DFW airport because he was too impatient for me to roll it up, and proceeded to make out with his opening artist in line at the ticket counter between phone calls with his wife...) Funk'd be a WHOLE WHOLE LOT better off in his musical career if he didn't fuck up his network relationships so frequently because he really is quite talent. The talent is the only thing he has going for him at all, really.
