Cool, so Shelter is still going up in NYC? That's about the hardest core dance club I've ever been to. Are they bringing their Phazon?

That would be sweet. The NYC club attracts a really diverse crowd, and has the best dance floor (from a gym), and the best sound system (a Phazon) that I've ever experienced. Plus, at around noon on Sunday, all these older black folks in church clothes started showing up. When I asked one of them where they came from, he told me that "We leave the kids with the grandma after that church, then we come out to this church." They kept it pumping until mid-afternoon with a packed floor. It was one of those nights where I jacked for 12 hours straight on nothing besides a little whiskey and a whole lotta house. Absolutely amazing experience.

Yes, i have heard many great things from friends who've dj'd at Shelter to people who just go to hang out / dance etc..

Plus Timmy Regisford is the king of that club (being the longest weekly dj there). Beats that joint down from Disco, to House, to Techno to Afro beat, you name it.

Yeah, he's a prime example of why technical skills are secondary to programming. Half his mixes are just jerking off all over the upfaders, but every song is so perfect for the moment that it doesn't even matter. Plus, he's not afraid to drop a song more than once in a set, Larry Levan style (one of the perks of spinning for 8 hours, I guess).

that is one thing I highly hate about NY Dj's (well not ALL OF THEM DO THIS) but they fuck with the impute faders trying to cause a "Delay" and it's fucking ANNOYING (cause they OVER DO IT), i was watching this video of Louie Vega djing at WMC and he killed the dance floor cause he was doing that excessively.

a lot of the times it makes me never want to listen to them and they play great music, not the best technical dj's in the world (but when you play a lot of live music as well as dance, it's gonna get loose).

Well i don't live in Houston, just giving my experience in seeing / hearing some NY DJ's.

i have a story about the first time i went to shelter...

it was in February of last year, on a Sunday morning like Zymote was talking about. it was unusually warm that day, so i was walking aimlessly down thru SoHo, already quite drunk from a early bloody mary brunch with my girl claire. so i'm walking down the street when and i hear this enormous BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM coming from inside some decrepit looking building. a bunch of cool looking people are standing around outside so i get pretty excited...i walk up to the dude standing at the door.

me: "hi! what is THIS!?!?!"

door guy: "man! this is THE shelter!"

me: "yes! i'm going in!"

door guy: "right on!" and noticing that i had a bottle of vodka sticking out of my jacket pocket, "and you can take that bottle in too! fuck it!"

so i get in and dance my ass off for the next three hours w/a bunch of old school househeads until the club closes around 3 in the afternoon...timmy regisford is fucking ridic.

def one of the more memorable experiences in my house-music existence.
