Mebbie so, but I got the idea they wanted to do something a little different and this was something new. They are talking about staying up very late if the crowd wants and as far as I am concerned, the music can go on until the crowd gets sober, so long as I can make both gigs for Saturday. With two gigs Friday and two gigs Saturday there won't be much sleep...

Yosh got there at 9:30 for the gig, but the owner cancelled. There was some problem with his liquor license it seems. I called the promoter who got there about ten minutes later and called us back with the reason for the cancellation. Hopefully this will be cleared up, but until further notice this gig is on ice. I am sorry if anyone came out to this venue this evening. I did confirm with the promoter on Monday that the venue had a liquor license (at least at that time). The first we heard of tonight's cancellation was when Yosh showed up to play. We had a gig at an airplane hanger 'till too late to do anything to notify anyone here.

First of all, the "scene" is not Top40, mashup, whatever the fuck is playing at this event. So you can drop that idea.
So any hate people throw at this event/thread has a lot to do with that. Or the fact that its basically the same 3 guys having a circlejerk about how badass each of them are.

Well, we planned on playing lots of hip hop on the explicit side and stretching a bit from the usual. This gig would be different from our normal gig. We had five shows this weekend and this drops it down to four. It might not be the EDM scene, but it is part of the music scene and there would be an element of EDM placed in the mix. Last night at the hanger, Shelby played to the crowd spread from ten yards up to about 80 yards from his set up off two electrical circuits, with folks from other hangers coming out to listen as well. The host liked rock and the girls wanted hip hop and top 40 and a few folks wanted some country. We got word from Yosh that the club gig was dead and Shelby gave them an extra hour as the party was still rocking. But in that extra hour, Shelby played Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner and moved over to EDM, blasting Wofgang's 5th at full power and playing other stuff more in Shelby's line. They liked it.

Working a smaller hip hop club and introducing some EDM is a step toward working larger hip hop clubs in Ft. Worth and introducing EDM there as well. Part of it is sharing new music with the hip hop crowd (and lots of other genre) and that is part of the fun for him. That is part of what djs do, isn't it, sharing music with people and giving them something they aren't used to hearing that they will enjoy?

I can understand some blasting at top 40 and hip hop. But what if nobody ever played any EDM in hip hop venues? I guess we would just have the same old same hip hop forever. It is kind of like using a fishing rod and a glow stick. Keep tossing it along the edge of the crowd and see if anyone gets hooked on EDM to be reeled into the EDM scene. It is very hard to totally change programmng from what the people currently listen to in a location and draw a crowd. We tried that and it did work, but it took a lot of time and effort. We are trying a little different approach with this, or were planning to anyway before the owner had to cancel. Maybe one way works better than the other. We do have some expeirence in establishing EDM in hip hop suburbs. Will the Richardson experiment succeed?

This last Wednesday there were plenty of hip hop and mashups in the basement of Plush. And the basement had a fair crowd of enthusiasts. So, it is part of the scene as experienced at Plush on Wednesday, at least in a separate room. Our brothers and sisters are trapped in hip hop hell and need to be experienced.

As far as the same three prople saying how great they are, well it is "promotion." If a venue has attributes is it not proper to sell the benefits and let people know what the light show will be and what activities can be found? Is it ok to put pictures and video of the event up so people can look and listen and decide from actual pictures and videos whether the event or series of events might appeal to them, especially if it is something very different from what they are used to doing in a particular area, such as introducing EDM to what was exclusively a rap and hip hop suburb? Should drink specials and musical guests be featured?

I don't think we ever painted Shelby as the second coming, but we do mention where he plays and what he plays and show the sound system and lighting system he brings. He does have requirements when he plays clubs and they are basically common sense. We told the promoter we had these requirements:
"We do require that the venue be secure from theft, violence and robbery. We do require that our audience be safe and secure in the club and in the parking lot. We do require that the venue be sanitary and have restroom facilities. We also require that the promoter and venue be professional and the show is entertaining and a fair value for the cost to attend."

We do spend a lot of time promoting events, and despite the weight and trouble, Shelby generally brings extra lighting and equipment to the normal show so that when he plays the audience gets a boost from their normal lighting and equipment experience at the particular venue. He is not producing his own music and is not a mash up artist, but he does have a good selection and selects what is moving the crowd at any given time. It is not a pre-programmed decision at all. Shelby comes out of mobile and wedding business and is used to playing sets from four hours to six hours on the average for very diverse crowds with quite different musical tastes. He KNOWS that you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time. He still does the mobile and private event business and the club and party and EDM shows cost him money. The private gigs pay for the EDM and when he signs up for EDM gigs, it is difficult or impossible to do the higher paying private gigs on the same day. If you see us promoting, we are promoting a business as well as a particular party. It isn't the second coming, but it is a good entertainment option when having a party and considering whether to hire a band or a dj or doing something themselves. We bring the best option for most private events at a reasonable price. For parties and clubs, Shelby has experience with the music and with crowds and audiences and typically they respond and he has fun and meets girls. Not a bad life.
