D Link Wireless USB adapter problem

I am having trouble with my wireless adapter on my Mac. I have it working, but whenever my computer goes to sleep, when it wakes up, the adapter doesnt register as functional anymore, yet my network says that it is connected. This usually results in the 4 language message of death when I run a new program. I am running OS 10.3. Has anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it? I don't have much experience with stuff like this...

Is the adapter plugged into the wall, or is it getting its power only from the computer?

It is powered directly from the USB port, and seems EXTREMELY hot to the touch.

Does it have a plug for the wall, or is the usb cable it's only possible source of power? If you can plug it into the wall, I'd suggest doing that. It sounds like it's drawing power from the laptop, but when the laptop goes into hibernation it kills the power to that adapter. For whatever reason it can't reconnect once you take the laptop out of hibernation mode.

my airport card on my mac used to pick up my router and give me a piss poor signal when I was right next to the damn thing. Now it won't give me a signal at all let alone pick up the router. You think something is wrong with the router? Should I call D-Link for an RMA request?

we used to but the guy told me that we needed to get rid of them so now we use the newer ones I think it's 5.2ghz or whatever. Pretty freaking annoying that I have to buy a whole new set of phones for them to tell me "oh it's because you're on a 2.4ghz phone that operates on the same frequency." If I knew that I wouldn't have bothered to buy the thing.

I have another issue to, I always have to reset my modem and router like 3 or 4 times a day is that normal? I'm using DSL...

I went through the same problem on my mac... their "tech" solution was to make the mac not go in low power mode.

I know on WIN2k you could exclude the network adapter from the devices that get "powered down" when the system is idle.

On OS 10 Jaguar the only devices I found I could exclude from powering down were the harddrives.

sorry, but this is completely untrue. most home internet connections, including cable and some of the fastest DSL available for home use only use 1/10 of the available bandwidth provided by a USB adapter.

so, unless you're running a very high-speed optical connection (OC98??) a usb NIC won't typically be the bottleneck when it pertains to internet use.

for transferring files over the network tho, yes, it will be a major bottleneck.

there are other problems with usb... just this isn't really one of them.

Just curious: are you using a laptop or desktop? If your using a powerbook or I-book I may have some hardware that could help you out.

I am using a desktop. And if this helps any, my machine doesnt recognise the hardware upon booting until I unplug it and plug it in again. And I am using the most current driver available. This makes no sense to me whatsoever.

i called D-Link and they tried to upgrade my firmware. Well it turns out that it ended up locking up and freezing. They made me do 50 billions things while holding down the reset button to make it work. So all and all I have to send it back to get a new one. Meh, at least I hope this will solve all my damn internet problems!
