If you want to be a pro, both. Out of the hundreds of scratchers that come in the shop, only about 10 use straight. And none of those can give me a reason why other than "Uh, 'cause it's better."

So it makes sense to be prepared to do your moves on any turntable. That way you can use any set up and feel comfortable. If you had to pick one, I'd say S-shaped. Most turntable battles I see that aren't huge events have turntables with S shaped tone arms.

Not from a turntablists brain, but from a brain that likes to be prepared.

maybe i'm wrong, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference one way or the other.....an s-shaped tone arm is curved on the end so that the cartridge is positioned to drop the needle in the best position to hold the groove....the position of the cartridge on most straight-arm tables i've seen is slightly offset to line up the stylus with the groove....the s-shaped arm holds the needle in this position without having to offset the cartridge...i've scratched on both and honestly can't tell much of a difference....i think stability depends more on the type of cartridge and needle you're using.

tables

I use str8 arm vestaxturntables they hold alot more than technics 1200 anyday but like homeboy said be prepared to use technics because its the industry standard. also vestax tables r made for battle style djs the old 1200's were made for just playing records i like them but i think i have a heavy hand so that is why i went with pdx2000.

http://topdjgear.infopop.cc/a_TURNTABLIST_1-Sep-01.htm
Turntables with S-shaped tonearms (such as the Technics SL-1200MK2) are particularly susceptible to wobble. Several new turntables designed for scratch performance offer a newly developed straight tonearm design (the ASTS Tonearm System introduced by Vestax). The straight tonearms eliminate the wobble effect almost completely by reducing misalignment of the needle and groove.

http://www.stereophile.com/thinkpieces/150/index2.html
Hoping that a fitter turntable will survive, Vestax recently tried to circumvent this problem. Since skating forces arise from offset headshell angles, they're making a 'table with a straight tonearm and headshell—no offset angle. This reduces skating forces and allows tracking weights to be smaller. The price of this, of course, is that the cartridge will no longer be at the optimal tangential angle to the record's grooves—but that's an audiophile thing, not a turntablist thing. Asking a turntablist whether his table is a "high-fidelity" component is as silly as asking a violinist if she plays an "audiophile" violin. Optimal groove/stylus geometry just doesn't matter.

http://board.rapmusic.com/showthread.php?t=650452
Straight Vs. Curved Tonearms:
A straight tonearm is less likely to skip than a curved one. DJ battles and clubs are 99% likely to be using a Technics 1200 series deck. By mastering the 1200s, you will be ready to play on anything. Straight tonearms also put more pressure on the stylus in the groove, thus increasing record wear, especially during backcueing.
