Armand Van Helden

I'm not too familiar with this style of music....so what genre would you label him as?

I'm talking mainly based on his track "Hear my name" or "my my my"

what genre would you say these two tracks are?

Also...do you any of you guys like armand van helden? i dont know how many people in dallas like him....

thanks

ok...just fyi, he is one of the most infamous producers of all time in a way.... he basically self created the speed garage genre (which is no longer pushed, unfortunately)....as far as what he's doing now.....couldn't tell ya and sorry if i wasted your time.

p.s. if you can post a link to those tracks i will tell u what genres they are in my book

AVH is house. But not your traditional house music. More along the lines of FDH or Basement Jaxx. I wouldn't call it hooligan house either, although 80's, punk, and electro are VERY upfront in his tracks.

AVH is AVH. One you pigeonhole him, he reinvents himself. Good shit. Check his mix CD "A New York Odyssey". Very well done.

He's a real prick, but I do give him credit for being one of the few producers/remixers who have made multiple crossover type tracks that weren't horribly cheesy. He owned 97 as far as popularity of tracks and it wasn't uncommon to hear several of his remixes in one set.

I got just about everthing he put out. Almost two hundred different records.I met him down in Houston once, he was cool as fuck. Most people will clown him for his dj skills, but he'll tell you he isn't the greatest nor does he ever want to be.He does house music like Dj premeire does hip hop. Mostly sample's he has a generic drum pattern , found on most records such as Funk phenomena, Wasn't the only, and U Don't Know Me.He comes from the fuck you school of dj's where you think he'll play his biggest track , and he'll end up playing hip hop.If you ever read article's in mag's about him he has the best out look on dance music . He tells it like it is and why most of whats out there is generic , and boring. He credit's guy's like Felix Da House Kat, Daft Punk,Basement Jaxx, Les Rhytmes Digitales,Dj Sneak, Junior Sanchez, for pushing house music to where it is.Him and Junior Sanchez were in Houston, and i asked them if i could videotape their set, and there were like "We don't Give a Fuck" so i did, and this was around the time "Where's Your Head At " just came out.Junior Sanchez rocked hardcore.

Anyone intrested in bringing either one down, i'll definately invest in that.Especially Junior Sanchez.

yup

Everything you heard before THIS post is true. A bit of a bastard (very laid-back bastard, mind you), will throw you with what he is bound to play, and helped to semi-define a genre unto itself.

Raw, rugged, and in his own way, original.

If you want good reference points, try the following to see why JF said he can't be pigeon-holed.

DJ Sneak remixes of AVH's "Cha Cha"
"Ultrafunkula" off of "Enter the Meatmarket"
"Killing Puritans" Full CD
AVH remixes of Tori Amos' "Professional Widow"
AVH remixes of Sneaker Pimps' "6 Underground"
AVH "U Don't Know Me"
AVH "Chocolate-Covered Cherry"
AVH "Full Moon" (featuring Common)
AVH "Funk Phenomenon" (the song that OWNED the airwaves the whole of 1996 here in Dallas. You can't help but to love it and hate it at the same time. I have a thing about that song, you could say. . .)

All of the aforementioned aren't bad and showcase the breadth of his musical endeavors.

AVH is AVH, simply stated.

every time I've seen him he's played quite chunky house, although I believe he was booed off the terrace at Space in Ibiza a few years ago for playing hip hop....

He did a remix of an Ace Of Base track back around '95 that owned. Witch Doktor, Feel It, Break Of Da 80's, Funk Phenonmenon, and U Don't Know Me are all the shizzle. I haven't really liked anything else he's done.

Sup Jason!

That was at the peak of his popularity. He did it because every one wanted/expected him to play AVH House.

He sure showed them.

I would like to go see him sometime....but now i kind of dont want to risk that he might play too much hip hop....because when that happens it ruins my whole vibe....

but the two tracks that I like more than anything are hear my name and my my my....any of you guys like those two tracks? or know if these two tracks are a specific type of house based on their beats and sounds?

He won't play hip hop now. But he does throw a lot of 80's and some punk. Check his mix, it's probably the closest thing to his live sets. Or hunt down his recent Essential Mix.
