DJ Booth Design help

We're planning on moving the deejay booth to be closer to the crowd. Because of space constraints and eletrical considerations, we've found our easiest solution is to place the new booth literally onto the current dancefloor. Of course, we're planning on moving our sound around accordingly, but nevertheless, traditionally a booth is "behind" the main sound system. This would still put the booth quite literally in the admist of 12000 watts.

Other than using "airspace" reinforcements, Auralex foam, and setting the tables on cinder blocks, what else can be done to optimize the booth?

Also, how do we direct the sound so that there isn't clashes between the booth monitors and the main pa?

Mardi Gras in Oklahoma City.

For pics, visit www.MardiGrasOKC.com then click on "pictures". Photos 1-5 in "Gallery 1" will kinda of give you an idea of the new booth placement (that wierd box thing with silver posts in picture 5 in the middle of the dance floor...yeah, new booth right there). Also, note the speaker placement in the ceiling. My guess is to move all the sound against the same wall as the new deejay booth.

Club looks ill, kind of like the newly renovated club One on the inside... sounds like your plans so far is better than what Darude played on...

Thanks for the compliment. Like all clubs, renovations, resdesigns, and remodels are necessary...always keep things fresh and improving. We're actually going through a lot of headaches trying to figure out how to move the deejay booth. This way, we'll have a much larger booth so that our artists can play in the booth instead of having a seperate sound stage like at the Darude shows. Plus, it'll bring the deejay closer to the crowd.

My main concern is how to work out the sound so that there isn't a bunch of sound clashing right over the deejay booth. One thought is to move all the sound to one wall (the side the booth is on) and position the speakers out to be at least even with the deejay booth. This way the sound from the mains will be projected outward and away from the booth. This also means that there will be several feet (about 10 ft.) of dead air where sound is not projected.

Any advice? Come on...Dallas is supposed to full of sound gurus.

Oh yeah, this kinda destroys our surround sound thing we have going on currently. I guess we'll go back to straight stereo...since all the sound will be against one wall...

If you're worried about vibration and/or feedback because of the main sound being so close to the booth, check out Freefloats or Earthquakes for the turntables.
As far as isolating sound inside the DJ booth, I'd say build plexi walls so that your Dj's can still interact with the crowd, while lowering the overall DB's inside the booth. That and a really good pair of monitors.

re: mal 1ce

Thanks for your response...

We are currently using Freefloats...and honestly they don't do too much, but something is better than nothing. Running our sound through a processor and isolating some frequencies to destroy that damn feedback created from turntable "rumble" did most of the work. Freefloats was extra protection for bass vibration in our current setup and they helped some.

Our future setup will be reinforced with cinder blocks and we'll probably still use the Freefloats... Still, most of the work will be done through clever frequency isolation.

re: GX_

Yeah, we're not doing the "suspended" thing. We have way too much equipment in our booth to do something like that...
