For remixing...is that the only way to go to get what you want in or out of a track?

I would suggest picking up a Ronco Plug and Play, Beat and Vocal Extractor.

What do you mean by this exactly? Are you talking about extracting vocals or particular sounds from a track?

Thanks. I'll check into those programs. For most tracks I'd like to erase the vocals, write a different melody, maybe make some loops from the original song, then put some of the original vocals back in however.

i would search for the accapella and instrumental versions.

also there is a program called melodyne that lets you change the key of shit kinda wierd...but erasing the vocals is kinda hard if not imposible to do depending...

It takes a lot of work to eq vocals out of eq down to an acapella. It's probably more frustration than you are willing to put up with. If you can't find the acapella and/or instrumental I suggest you start chopping the track up and try combining loops you cut out with what you want to add to it.

You can grab the original beat if you cut up the beginning or end of most tracks, or if you want to supply your own beat/bassline you can eq most of that out of a loop with the original melody or vocals or whatever you are after and lay new work underneath it.
