DSL vs Cable

Ok, I know this is a pretty worn out question, but I was just curious what you guys thought was better. I currently have a cable modem, and have had it for the past 4 years. I am tired of paying the high cost of it, and was thinking of switching to DSL. I know once upon a time, cable seemed to be the better choice, but since the battle for customers is going on, has DSL gotten back up to par with cable? I NEVER have trouble with my cable modem, I mean never. Its just wayyy cheaper to go DSL now, but does that cheaper price reflect the kind of service that you will get?

the people that i know that have SBC DSL are always complaining about their service. i pay (i think) about $40 a month for my cable connection but i think it's worth it for the speed and reliability.

I'd go cable if I had the choice. Having DSL means you have to have a phone line and paying for both puts the bill higher than just a cable modem. Assuming you have a cell phone of course. I've also found cable to be more reliable.

i never understand why people even ask these questions on here...

it's all relative to WHERE YOU LIVE!

ask your neighbors what they use and what they like.

i've had cable at 3 locations and DSL at 2. some have been great and some have sucked. it's like real estate... LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.

some areas DSL will suck worse than cable and others it's the opposite.

and if you are asking about DSL- ask the ISP how far the lines are from your house.

Yes DSL has been brought up to speed.. .. But what matters most when shopping around for a Service provided is just that, the Provider them self. Example: Verizon used to have three levels of service (something to the effect of: basic, intermediate & whatever the hell the third level of service for 1.5mb up & down)
They have since then gotten ride of it and now have one general level of service which I think is 1mb, and I've never had an issue with it. However through friends that have other providers & heard mixed review of them.

If I was you, I'd stick to dsl for now. Verizon recently debuted some new technology where they get speeds of up to 5 mbits per second now. Let's see what Comcast thinks of that shit.

Ok, here is the thing. DSL is for the average surf the internet person. IMO. The reason I hate DSL is because you never have a perpetual connection. You constantly have to "sign in." And when more than one person in your area has the same service, and is using it at the same exact time frame as you. Your bandwith is decreased. It comes with bulky annoying software that never stops bugging you to sign up for thier speacials. That netscape based browser is hassle.... Endless..

Cable- You can download with out a worry of a disconnect. Everyone should be able to recieve the 3meg bandwith the costumer payed for. No software to install.. Unless you have to install the drivers for the modem. Which only would be necessary if you had to use the modem via USB...

Quick install, no waiting for "techs" to go through your home and "install" phone filters or check for any bad connections.

IMO!

i'd go with DSL with a provider that isn't PPPoE. Comcast makes you install their fuckin software now. Dirty fuckers.

This information is incorrect. the only DSL that makes you "sign on" is PPPoE DSL. Meaning its a PPP connection (dialup) over Ethernet. The DSL that we provide is a straight static connection with a real world IP, or a NAT address behind one of our gateways. You don't have to wait for a tech to come to your home and install filters, you can do that yourself, its quite simple.

DSL is actually becoming faster than cable, i've currenlty got a 3 meg connection down with at 384 uplink and 4 usable real world IP addresses. With DSL you're not limited to one company, you can use a variety of them.

Cable isn't better IMO.

I used to be diehard for DSL, now I'm a Comcast whore...and then Verizon(a company i do not care much for) brings out this gem:

http://www22.verizon.com/FiosForHome...code=&variant=

i rather like not having a home phone, so i'll wait for Comcast to up the ante...proverbially speaking.

And the setup / configurations are getting better as well where with some, there is no driver to install, no configuration to jack around with & all that is required of user is to connect the filers on the line and plug into the matrix..

I'll tell what they think of it. A cable company is building a what you would call "Super Server " under the Atlantic Ocean. I belive once the technology gets to a retail. Dsl will be history. You have no idea what the world of tech is coming to. Phones will not require wires. Belive me I've seen this stuff. Its fucking awsome. Voice Identification will be come as cheap as the prostitute on the corner.

Dood/Doodet, Verizon has nothing on the technology that theese other companies. Give it two years. You will be shitting bricks.
