| Gear for the boyfriend
Ok, so I want to buy some gear for my boyfriend as an anniversary present. He produces drum and bass, and is always saying he needs more gear. However, I have no idea what one box is from the next. The words MPC, sampler, and pads mean nothing to me. So, can anyone please help me out and tell me what I should buy. Price range is not important, just quality. I want him to be able to get the most out of whichever peice I purchase. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, L J |

His mackie 1202 is shorting out on him during live sets so you might want to get him a new mixer. If you get him another box or sampler you may want to get him a 14 or 16 channel mixer. On the sound enhancement side of things he needs a good compressor (Mundo and Ropelab use T.C. Electronic Finalizer Express) and an Aphex 204 Aural Exciter with Big Bottom will add a lot to the sound too. Rock on, Don |

I wish I could tell you what he has, but I just dont know about that stuff. So far I get that he needs a mixer, but what is the best one to get? Also, he used to have this thing that had pads on it. It was a big beige square box that had a floppy drive on it. He had to sell that a while back, but I know he used it a lot. I could ask him, but I want this to be a total suprise, and if I start taking an interest in his gear he will know something is fishy. Don could probably tell you before I could. His name is Josh Cooper from Earthorbit. Thanks for all your help! |

Ive met Josh and chatted with him before. Really nice guy. It sounds like what he used to have and sold was an Akai MPC-2000 or MPC-3000. The current model is the MPC-2000xl with different options availible for it. (They are about to release the MPC-4000 but its not out yet and its going to be at least $3500 I would estimate). Id recomend getting him a mpc-2000xl since he had one previously and used it. Id say check zzounds.com, music123.com, 8thstreet.com and then get a quote from GC, Mars or Brook Mays. You could also consider Ebay - there are always a couple MPCs on there at any given time. -bobby- |

| i've got an idea
Based on my completely unbiased, from-the-books opinion, I think that you should buy the following items for your boyfriend: - Pair of Roland DS-90A 24bit Reference Monitors - Roland VS-1880HD digital mixer/hard disk recorder - Roland XP-50 workstation - ART MultiVerb II rackmount fx processor Luckily, i happen to have all of the above items in my possession, and they could be yours for a low-low price =) |
