this is something i deal with quite a bit. i blame my adhd, but it could be from various reasons. i am currrently very into expiremental, idm, and deep elektro. my tastes change quite a bit. when i first got into edm it was for my love of house. how have you changed over the years?

my tastes have changed because my views have changed. I like all types of music now a days and stopped being so narrowed minded about others musical talent. This was the best thing I could've ever done because now I'm able to appreciate all the sites and sounds that surround me and everyone else.

honestly, my tastes haven't changed. I pretty much listen to anything that's out there at any given time and I've always been this way. I can listen to a cd that's 10 years old, and to me.. it will still sound as fresh as the first day I heard it. I dig it all over again..

As far as spinning goes, I started off playing house. I quickly became interested in the more tribal oriented deeper sound which led me to "West Coast House." That branched off into Progressive House, which I played strictly for a while and later layered with Techno. Lately I've been playing strictly hardcore Techno. I'll probably venture back to experimenting with the Progressive House/Techno sound a little more and see how I feel about that. Last time I browed through the progressive title, I was none to pleased. As far as what I listen to: I've been listening to almost strictly Industrial/Metal/Rock lately. The only time I jam electronic music is at work. |

I started out listening to House and Acid Breaks in the early 90's. I stuck with that until I got into DnB, Hip Hop, IDM, and Downbeat stuff and didn't come back into dance music until '01. I checked everything out, got on a short GU spree and then started dj'ing shortly after. I went through a Prog phase until I realized that the elements I liked in Prog were more along the House side of things. So I made the switch and haven't looked back. I still love anything Acid too. DJ-wise, my tastes have been refined and I've finally found a style of music that I can make a long term commitment to. But in all other sense I'm pretty much into the same things that I've always been. |

I stop digging anything that starts to get repetitive on me.

Well let's see........I started out listening to trance (duh), that was pretty much all I listened to and wasn't interested much in listening to anything else. Next I discovered and fell in love with was progressive house. Then funky/disco/retro house. Now I finally appriciate deep house (a genre that I never thought I would like much). Also I'm an electro freak now. Can't get enough of that shit. I hardly ever listen to trance anymore actually. A lot of it gets on my nerves now! lol. Although a lot of it I still will always love.....but I like SOOOO much more stuff now it is unreal. Along the way I became a fan of dnb, breakbeats, and everything inbetween. The only EDM genre I still can't stand today is ambient. So....um yeah!

My tastes have changed due to geography and a need for horizon broadening. For example, in Denton, there is not much of an EDM scene at all. When UNT classmates ask me what i listen to and i say EDM, specifically dnb, liquid funk, tech house, deep house, etc., they say "Oh you mean techno?" So in order to better interact with my peers (and to preserve my own sanity and frustration), i picked their brains and got a couple of mix cd's from them from artists like The Thrills, Bloc Party, Nada Surf, Hot Hot Heat and other "emo" bands, and now I feel like I have a vast variety of music to enjoy instead of zeroing in on only one type. When you can't beat 'em, join 'em...but still keep your own flavor. |
