| let me show you ;) | Music Concrète (found this in my theory book) Music Concrète (1948) Music composed and realized in an electronic studio using pre-existing (‘concrete’) sounds, rather than conceived abstractly, notated onto paper and then preformed. The term was coined by the French composer Pierre Schaeffer (1910- ) who first developed this type of music. The natural sounds are recorded onto tape and then manipulated as physical entities through tape splicing, looping and so on. P. Schaeffer, A la Recherche d’une Musique Concrète (Paris, 1952)

it's also very focused on sequencing, rather than processing. The "french model" prefers sampled sounds in tape pieces rather than synthesized, because natural sounds found in our environment consistently contain more complexity (in timbre, etc) than synthesized sounds. They like to synth/process it up too, just not within music concrete. I, for one, like to process... PS: did you know that the french government pays artists (academic and non) to make music and do electronic music research?

I myslef, took Electro-Acoustic Composition for about 2 years in college.... we covered Music Concrète as well. The focus of the course how to make a composition without relying on ANY tradtional methods from "music" as we know it, thus no tempo, no time notation, no melody, only interweaved gestures that build upon themselves to make an overall sequenced composition. I grappled with the courses for two long years trying to justify how some of the things I heard in there could be considered art, much less music. In the end though, its where I picked up most of my composition and technical recording skils. I'll upload my final project from the class for you two a bit later. Electro-Acoustic Music, cool stuff. - jv -
