my best friend plays nothing but illegally dowloaded files, and he hasn't had one complaint about sound quality, no matter how shitty the file sounds. Actually there are a lot of shitty sounding records/poorly pressed records out there too.

So, is your point that the crowd doesn't care so why should the dj? That's a pretty shitty way to look at things in my opinion... I think dj's(and this applies much more to dj's that play out in front of a crowd) should appreciate the fact that out of all of the people in that crowd, they are the one that has been chosen for one reason or another to bring the music to the people. There are principles involved here in my opinion...

The DJ is there to make them dance. If he does that, he's doing his job. Whether it be with 8-track, reel-to-reel, vinyl, cassette, cd, wav, mp3. If the crowd doesn't care and they move their asses or whatever they are there to do, the rest is all just the DJ's personal preference.

I care, I spent over 10k on records during the past 2 years. What I am saying is that no one else cares, so whether you play a record, or off 2 inch tape, or an 8 track, just play some music.

if you think about it, places like beatport are selling licensed mp3 copies of artist's work, i.e. these artists trust enough in the quality of mp3's to allow reproduction of their tracks, i.e. if they don't care why should you?

really though i don't think anyone playing other people's music deserve any stripes at all.

the stripes thing really was a joke... and I agree, we are just playing other people's music... That's why I think we should not trivialize even further by playing low quality copies of other people's music... Hopefully if people demand more, record sales will go back to where they were around '95-'96 and this thing will pick up again... You don't think that the lack of quality music in the past few years correlates to the drop in record sales, which correlates directly back to dj's playing mp3's and not paying for their music? I think it does...
