WAV files...

Why is it big news that Beatport now offers the option of downloading the music as a WAV file. I could always load an mp3 into Cubase before and work on it from there. I'm confused...

I have seen people reference this article many times and from personal experience, I disagree with it completely. The attack on the kick always sounds very dead on low quality files. It's like the kick is kind of floating around in dead space instead of crisply driving in and out.

It is also a huge issue with me personally that a dj would play out and get paid to play someone elses music and not be willing to pay for it. I know the psytrance scene in particular is riddled with mp3 dj's, and the labels are finally picking themselves up out of the mp3 rut that has lasted many years. I'm sure as other genres move to cds, the same thing is happening.

Also, as far as taking an mp3 and working on it in Cubase, anything lost in compression cannot be recovered.

wav or aiff are not compressed files (audio)

once the file has been compressed into a mp3 or aac it's lost some data.

when you expand a compressed file... it's still missing certain data.

so starting from a wav or aiff means no lost data (or more importantly, sound quality).

you don't have to play low quality mp3's. i'd love to give you a test at a club between a wav and a 320 mp3 and see if you can tell.

and the bootlegging thing is a completely different issue. people pay for mp3's at places like beatport. and let's not get into THAT debate....

320k mp3 of a 7 to 8 minute track is about 20,000 bytes
FLAC/AIFF/WAV file of that same track would be around 70,000 to 80,000 bytes... That is still far too much unneccessary compression. Hard drive space is pretty cheap these days...

When mixing a 320k mp3 with an original copy of a mastered disc of AIFF/FLAC files, yes I would be able to tell every time...

whatever, maybe you guys can.

i guess my point is that there are people out there that will get pissed if you identify a Cordillacris crenulata grasshopper as a Cordillacris occipitalis but to everyone else it's still a frickin' grasshopper.

so, as far as I understand this test... They are playing everything at a compressed rate... The WAV files they are playing are compressed to the same size as the mp3, the WMA, and the Vorbis files, if that is the case, then what they are testing is irrelevant to the problems being discussed.
