Sorry, no tracklist here. And for you kiddies that don't know who Stacey Pullen is... BORN Detroit 1969 FAMILY “My dad was a singer. He performed in a group called The Capitols, a local Motown group. It’s not like I grew up in a star-studded environment, but we had ‘dad’ connections, people he knew. It was sort of like what’s going on now; everybody knew each other through somebody. My aunt, she dated Smokey Robinson in High School. Detroit is a tight-knit community.” MUSICAL ROOTS “Motown is based on singing and vocals. I got hooked on keyboards and drums, nothing to do with vocals, more the base elements of music making. In fact I started out playing the flute. That was where I got a sense of melody, I never got that from singing, I was always infatuated with instruments. The first record I bought was a Ramsey Lewis record, a straight up Jazz cat. I think he was from Detroit too. I listened to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye up in the house, my parents had all the classics, y’know? So music chose me. I got drums for Christmas and I’d play them all the time… one thing led to another. I’ve been in marching bands, I’ve done displays on football fields, al kinds o’ stuff. I started collecting records in the ‘Soul Disco’ era. Getting’ up, partyin’ and playin’ cards with the family.” FIRST PROJECTS “I wanted to gain musical respect from my peers, not just pay the bills and I looked up to those early Detroit guys. For me to be in a studio doing my first projects with them was more than anybody could ask for. Derrick [May] was busy traveling and Kevin [Saunderson] was constantly in the studio, doing different remixes and things. So we started this kind of remix group. I’d start the pre-production on remix projects and then he’d come in and put his signature ‘Reese’ touch to it. That was how I got my first studio experience. Derrick was more the artist, the integrity, and Kevin gave me the edge, the understanding of my environment. The first Stacey Pullen production was ‘Silent Phase’ on a compilation called ‘Made In Detroit’ on KMS Records. The track was called ‘Wave The Rave Goodbye’. I did it on a Juno keyboard and an 808 drum machine.” LABELS & PRODUCTION “I released an album on Science/Virgin and right now I’m concentrating on my record label, Black Flag. The album [‘Today Is The Tomorrow You Were Promised Yesterday’] was nice, jazzy… y’know. But from now on I’m strictly DJ-friendly.” DJING “I like trying to take people on a musical journey, which means me playing at least three or four hours. In clubs a lot of people ask ‘What are you gonna play tonight?” and I never know… I just play from the heart and I don’t categorise it. It’s house, techno, broken beat or whatever: if the vibe is right I do it.” http://www.chemistry.nl/music/images...187a216992.mp3 |
