Saving a scratched cd

How can I save a cd that has been scratched to hell?

It's an old mix from a friend, so it's not something I can buy again. It's not scratched as if it's been laying in the street, but it's scratched enough to where my laptop won't even recognize it.

There has to be some way, yeah?

Have you ever tried that? I have heard it works, but I have never had the desire to put toothpaste on my lens.

It gets rid of Zits too though.

I have used the toothpaste before it works. gotta make sure to buy the plain white paste, not gel. The white paste is just like liquid sandpaper, little dab, couple drops of water, and rub in little circles all over. Do it for about an hour while your sitting around watching TV or something, and then rinse it off and the scratches will be gone.

Wait until I can try it in SF first. You don't wanna chance messing it up worse, and I don't wanna put a CD in my drive that has had toothpaste on it. If I can't fix it, use the toothpaste method as a last resort.

(1) don't put toothpaste on the lens. you buff the back of the cd with it.
(2) you would clean it off before it would go into any cd player/computer
(3) if his computer doesn't read it now, i highly doubt that it would be read on Mike's so you could import into Sound Forge.

I'm gonna give the toothpaste method a try on another cd. I don't want to risk this one.

Sound Forge can read just about anything. I have salvaged many a CD of my own... some that would not read on anything. Whether I have the time to fix each little skip/scratch is another story.

your cd player/burner is hardware that reads/writes independent of Sound Forge.

sure... some cd players are better than others at reading a scratched disc, but sound forge isn't the reason why. you may just have a good laser system.

this is true, but... I should rephrase that. My DRIVE has never had a problem extracting audio from a disc in Sound Forge. However, it HAS had problems reading a disc when I just want to play it in Media Player. Why is that?
