Roland JV-80 Synth

Does anyone know of any producers who use this synth? A friend of mine is selling one and before I plug it in and mess around with it I wanted to know of the type of sound people put out with it.

Its functional but not great for designing sounds. i would go with the JV-1080 instead. what is more important is what you can do with a piece of gear but not which producers you can emulate or copy using the same equipment. Try finding a piece of gear that is functional for you and something you can learn from.

Hmmm. I don't know anything about those synths. Much less the one my friends offering, except for the fact that he's offering it dirt dirt cheap. With one broken key. It's sitting in my room right now, I've been piddling around with it a while. When I get a little more cheese I'll look into your dx7 and the juno 106.

Just for some synth smackdown....
in the beginning Yammie created the DX7. A frequency modulation synthesizer. Good sounds but crappy interface. A year later, Korg followed up with the M1, a highly praised digital synthesizer that sounded both realistic and multi channel. Roland responded with the D50, praised for its cost performance ratio. Some time later they releiced the JV 80 keyboard, praised for its interface and sound scultping capabilities (primitive by todays standards). This in turn inspired yammie to reliece the CS series and Roland suited more economical XP 80/Xp 50 (utilising the JV1080 Engines), to which Korg responded with the Trinity using Moss Technology, which in turn inspired Roland to create the JP8000 which in turn was part of the roland groove lineof the late 90s.


Oh the list can go on forever... the moral of the story is, the JV80 is using prototype/early gen JV1080 engine technology, to witch even today the Fantom Series still follows.

IMO The JV1080 engine is by far better than Yammie CS/Motif or Korg Trinity/Moss/Triton, in terms of anti ailising and filter design. Yammie and korg uses effects DSP on the output to enhance their sounds while the JV1080 had awesome sounds without the DSP effects. Try turning off All effects blocks, delay, reverb, chorus, and reverb blocks on each of these engines and you will hear what Im talking about.

PS... the JV series has the better rompler samples than Trinity/moss, and CS series.


get the JV 80. Tinker with it... and you will get awesome results. Please tech yourself wave and music theory dso that when you program multitembre sounds you should utilize harmonic sample layering...

He's selling it to me for 50 bucks.
It does have one broken key. How much would that run to fix?

I figured buy it and if it sucks, sell it for profit.
It goes for 350 on ebay.

i have to say that most of the jv series im not a huge fan of. to much bad emmulation. some rhodes patches were pretty cool, but i think its weird that roland that came out with the 909 and 303 would shift gears in a kinda crappier direction
