Soundcard Suggestions

I recently picked up an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile about a week or so back. I can't get sound to come out of this fucking piece of shit after repeated uninstalls and reinstalls from myself and a couple of other people. It will work fine for a bit and then just suddenly stop for no reason. It only seems to work when I'm just using applications that use the soundcard (Ableton, WMP, etc). Like for example, I can't browse the internet and listen to music at the same time. Fucking dumb. I had an ancient Creative Live Drive soundcard that never gave me a single problem and yet this newer one isn't worth a the shipping it cost to get it to me. I'm sending it back asap.

Anyway, I need to grab a new external soundcard, preferably one that doesn't suck mule cock. Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core Processor +3800
2.0 Ghz, 1.93 Gig RAM

Windows XP Pro 2002 Service Pack 2

I'm looking for a card that performs well with Ableton. I'm thinking external because eventually I want a lappy to take on the road to play on Ableton with, and it would be nice to have one soundcard to use at home on the pc and on the road for mobile raving. At the moment I'm only interested in doing dj type stuff with Ableton but eventually I want to start writing my own tunes and beats to incorporate into my dj sets. I have about 250 to play with at the moment.

I'd guess user user error or bad hardware, because that soundcard isnt all that bad.

Its not stellar by any means, but its definetly better than your Soundblaster.


What kind of ins / outs would you like to have on your sound card?

I'd prefer 1/4", but this one has RCA. I'd be happy if I could just get this one fucking working.

I have a M-Audio Audiophile 192 and have never had any problems in two years, I'm using ableton cubase and reasons

1.5 gigs of ram
pentium 4 2.1 gig processor

I wonder what's going wrong then. I've installed the most recent driver package and followed the instructions to the tee.

are you installing the drivers prior to plugging in the soundcard?

that should be the order.

is windows set to use that card to play internal sounds? check Sounds and Ausio Devices in your Control Panel.

Did you disable the onboard sound in your BIOS yet? I would reccomend that as well.

Not sure about the BIOS thing, but I did install the drivers prior to plugging it in. It's weird because it will act fine and then just stop working. Now my computer doesn't even see the fucking thing at all.

It has known issues.... check the aldj board... I would go with the firewire410 or the motu ultralite... your going to spend about 100-200 more than you did on that audiophile.

Thanks T. Yeah, Wes got it up and running yesterday to where it would make sounds in WMP and Ableton, so I left it alone. I go to play something in WMP today and it starts up, but as soon as I opened up my Firefox it immediately stopped.

This is fucking torture. All I want to do is have fucking sound on my pc. These beautiful new Events I have need to rave. My neck and shoulders aren't helping out much either. Ugh.

What's your budget? Also, don't buy anything M-Audio. I got a Presonus Firebox at Guitar Center for $299. It's got plenty of ins and outs and sounds great and works like a charm.

I dont know why the driver keeps uninstalling itself. Like I said last night you might want to try installing the drivers from m-audio in succession from oldest to newest. restarting your computer each time. also make sure your java updates are up to speed with mozilla.

i havent used the personusfirebox yet... but I heard they make a good product. Sources say the pre's on the motu are better though.

Probably. I heard the MOTU's have issues running on Windows machines, and they are quite a bit more expensive. For what he's wanting I think a Firebox would be perfect.
