| Speaking of mics
What is THE studio microphone to have? I was doing some research and saw a lot of hype about the Neumann U87. But...I have to ask: is there an industry standard for mics? Or in the end, does it all come down to personal taste?

Personally, I love the blueberry. but... that's just me. Nice poppy highs on it. Dunno if I'd call it "the" studio mic though, because I see it as mainly a vocal mic. Not as an all around versatile mic.

While it seems that the Neumann U87 is the preferred microphone for vocal studio recording. It does require an extremely quite vocal room. It will pick up sounds that your ear may not even hear. (I could hear my upstairs neighbor talking on the phone) It will pick up everything!. I actually recorded using this microphone and also used a Shure KSM47. It was mainly a test recording using a Protools HD system. I actually liked the sound that the KSM47 gave me on the vocals (female singer) better than the U87. Personally I hate the U87, it's way too bright for me.

We have a 8 of the AT4050's. Use them all the time in recording full concert bands. Great warm sound. I haven't had the chance to hear a Charter Oak yet. And the Manley is quite nice. I have also had the chance to use a Rode Classic 2 tube mic, and am quite impressed. Although it is extremely sensitive.

I love my 4050....It was a steal at $290 off of ebay. The 4050 sounds like silk on some of the vocalists I record. Mainly R&B.....great for stacking vox too. | |

ya the 4050 is the work horse... im still playing with combinations of preamps to figure out what i like it best on.. we have the Millenia STT-1, the Manley VoxBox, and the Langevin DVC now. The Manley mic on the Millenia sounds fuckin sweet.

it's a little bit of both. all those mic's are from decintly priced and sound great too way expensive and sound nice too. you are gonna want a few different kinds ,a dynamic, and some condenser mics with small and large diaphragms. do a little research and you can usually come up with something worth the money you pay without shelling out top dollars
