![]() | What program do i need??????
For my computer, so that i can start making cds. I wanna record them as mp3's, since i have a splitter to seperate the trax, then rewrite them as wav files. So i was just wondering if anyone knew which was the best for that situation. Also, is there any special connections i need to buy. Thanks for your help, JEremy |

Why wouldn't you record as a wav file?

FYI if you're recording as mp3s all your computer is doing is taking the wavs it's making and converting them to mp3s. It uses more processing power and you end up with lower quality.

well, what's the best thing to do then, because, i tried at a friends house recording, and after every mix i'd have to stop to break up the tracks and then start back up again, and it sucked, so what is the best thing to do?? Thanks for all your input thus far Jeremy |

Record to wave lab or sound forge and split the tracks up as wav files, 44.1khz, 16 bits per sample. This way you will have the highest quality to burn to cd. with wave lab you can apply vst effects if you are so inclined. I recommend it over sound forge, which only allows for directX.

Any sequencer that can write a file directly to the hard drive should do the trick for you. A few are Cubase, Logic, & Ableton Live. If your not up for spending that much you can get smaller, scaled down versions of these I.E. Micro Logic or Cubasis (probably less than $100) or mabye even use a demo. These can also help you do some basic mastering stuff like normalization, etc. You will have to cut up your new file and turn the slices into Mp3 seperately as there is no live Mp3 recorder out yet that I am aware of. Have Fun!! |

TotalRecorder records directly off of your soundcard and can record live to mp3, but any live mp3 recorder is really just processing the raw audio in RAM and then encoding and writing the mp3s to disc. Takes hella more cpu time and memory.

ok, went to totalrecorder.com, and it seems like that would work, but my only question now is, if it records as a wav, when i'm done, can i go back and break it up into tracks? One more thing, the comp. is a hp pavillion 7955, and i looked on the back and i was wondering how the hell do you hook it up?? Jeremy |

OK, first you have to record it to your computer as one long track, and as you mix mark the times where you want to split it. Use a stopwatch so you can get it down to the second(or you could just listen to it afterwards and decide where you want the track splits based on the sound of the mix, probably better IMO.) Next you get a program that can split one large wav into a number of smaller ones. i.e:Sound Forge; Cool Edit; Vegas; etc. Finally you take those smaller wavs and burn them to cd with ZERO PREGAP between tracks. This is very important so as to make sure you don't get those small pauses between the tracks. There, The End.

As for the exact details of how to split the files, that depends on which program you end up using, and most have a help file or tutorials somewhere that can help you with that.
