Record Industry idiots

My question, why would every record company, especially big ones, put every song on there catalog online? Even small companies, WHY?

I usually end up downloading free shit off blogs, and other random sites, when i would have no problem giving up to 2-4$ a track, especially if i knew it came encoded from a high quality source.

It honestly doesn't make any sense. Surely there is a reason for this, so someone enlighten me.

Here's the downside to this. Smarter people who can form complete thoughts in their head realize that there are sources to find new muisc for free. This means the dipshits who cant think still pay for their music. The industry is aware of this so they pander to the dumbies. All ad and production money goes to pushing the dumbest of songs to the most retarded of people so we are assaulted with retarded music developed for said retarded peps.

And those retarded peeps get dumber every fuckin day.

i think another big problem with Major labels is that they still operate with a street date. Itunes as well. This is the on demand age, kids ,people want shit now. The thing is how many tunes get leaked over the internet these days only to have a street date miles away. My thinking is if you wait till the street date and it gets leaked anyway there's a greater chance the album will bomb, so why not just start putting it out there. In ten years i say most music will be given a way free just the way Radiohead is doing their shit.

Im sure there are lots of online places you can find free music.
Some times for certain Cds or lps or cd singles or 12s, things are deleted.
You cant just go to any record store and order it. Unless they still have something that old. Most people, pay for what buy online vs trying to find some site for nothing. I mean alot of these free music share sites, have problems with over all quality. Bottom line, is money. Finding an obscure album cut, is sometimes a little hard, also consider the fact differnt regions, the cd might have bonus or live and tracks not on your domestic, release. The question really is why not, this is there business and why not, its a way to sell more product and make more money.

Unfortunately, street dates are needed so that magazines, blogs, stores, and other sales outlets can generate publicity through reviews, promotion, etc. ahead of time. The shitty part is, these people who are trusted with advance copies are usually the ones doing the leaking. It's really a shitty no-win situation for the artist. No publicity for an album that might net meager profits, or risk it and gain some publicity and lose all your album sales to a leak.

If it were my label, I would police the shit out of every copy distributed ahead of time and even go so far as to watermark everything. Ive been keeping close tabs on this stuff recently as a CD with my work on it comes out next week and it has really shocked me how many people were willing to leak it or distribute it without authorization, even though every single copy has been documented rather closely. The music industry is in a bad spot right now, and I don't see a fix anywhere on the horizon.

The concept of putting out good music for everyone to download is that some of the good music may get to the music dumbies. Not paying for shit is smart, but at some point it becomes useless to produce it if no money is made. Its really the only reason i try to buy legal shit, when available, its kind of an appreciation type thing.

I understand what you are saying , i run a small shop, and i personally can attest to the destruction leaks have on an artist more than a few friends have had it happen. However be it big label small label's, hip hop or dance, it comes down to demand, and people's unwillingness to wait for a release. Dj's especially have always had this me first mentality when it comes to new music, it used to be done though white labels, and bootlegs, now all they have to do is find the mp3 on the internet. I'm surprised Major labels haven't set up some sort of membership site where anyone can go on and buy upfront tunes now at a higher price than normal charges, and then release the it to the general public at a lower cost. I do agree the industry is fucked until they figure out how to fix this situation

Thomas from Ghostland Obseveratory told me the other day, your fucked as an artist unless you put out a record, its the only way you'll ever have a chance to get paid, and its not through the sale of the music but the live performance, the concerts, and festivals your fans want to see.

They'll be on Conan Obrien tonight peep em out!

yeah, money off album sales is not ever very much, but it seems like if they went through the process of making a high quality, 2$ digital download available, it would at least make a little money, and its easy to stock(you dont have to)

Absolutely. Once again, I predict that in the near future, a large majority of music, especially EDM, will not be released at all in the form of individual tracks or albums, but will be held onto by artists for the purpose of stimulating their appeal as live acts.
