Tech-house? Everyone's definitions are so freaking different. Well, whatever the hell you choose to call it, I don't care... it was a groovy-laid-back-kindy-funky that I enjoyed.

Tech House has become a catch-all for anything that doesnt clearly fit into a higher level category like "house", techno", "progressive", blah blah blah. Many peeps dont know what to make of the 'ol "tech house". Here are a few of the more established strains:

UK Tech House: Coined by "Evil Eddie Richards" and considered the "orginal" Tech House by many. Shuffley house beats with wiggley basslines and dark moody basement vibes. Very headsy. Not much of this around these days...

German Tech House (warm): Synthy and atmospheric with warm tones ala Terry Lee Brown Junior (a pioneer of this sound) and Timewriter. This style has merged with a touch of Progressive ala Urbantorque, Nikola Gala, etc. Very spacey.

German Tech House (cold): More on the bleepy minimal tip. Poker Flat is a good example. Very edgey.

US Tech House: More on the House tip. Funkier style of Tech House... sometimes hard to differentiate from staight up house, but a bit more driving with stronger basslines and a few more synths than usual. A bit funky is key though. Very quirky.

Swedish Tech House: Very deep and atmospheric, a cousin to the sounds of Terry Lee Brown, etc. These were artists like Hakan Lidbo on labels like Tangent Beats. Not much of this around these days either. Very pretty.

Clubby Electro Tech House: Clubbier, pushy tunes with "techy" electronic tones. Not really "house" in that there's no real shuffle and no soulful vibe but it has a 4/4 beat and isn't Progressive - thus it gets grouped with Tech House. The south americans love to refer to this sound as "tech house". Very pushy.

Eh, i hear all kinds of different terms, especially working in the record store, i've got people asking for stuff i've never heard.

I guess if you went by JV's chart it would be more us tech-house, i just call it deep tech house.

But, whatever you wanna call it is cool with me as long as you enjoyed it.
