What you said about the whole 'live mix vs ableton mix' thing is right. A mix is a mix and the track selection is what's most important. If you can pull off live what you can do in Ableton, then you're good. A perfect example... Scholwinski does lots of mixes in Acid. But he can do them live just as well. However, what Zymote said was referring to the fact that there are a lot of 'DJs' who will do mixes in a program and then crash when they perform live. Not good at all. That being said, if you can pull it off live, then there's no reason to even tell people how you made your demo. Just my opinion.
pretty much what he said about the mixes.

i wasn't trying to keep you from getting gigs, sorry if i my post about 18+ clubs sounded like that.

just keep at it, eventually your time will come like all of ours.

Why not? Quickness and an easy way to throw something together to get a demo out of WHAT you play. If someone said to me they had a gig for me but needed a demo in an hour and a half, I might throw one together in a program as opposed to recording a mix live. I could do it live and the cat jumps on my tables or mixer and the mix is fucked and I lose the chance at the gig. I know that situation is kinda random but when it comes to providing someone with an example of your programming of songs, using a program isn't making you any less of a DJ if you can already DJ.

Shit. You're still waiting on your time.
basically if you have 'credibility' there's really not a need to make mixes "live" every time you do a mix. Some people do it every time, some don't.

but if you're trying to make a name for yourself, it's best to make the mixes "live" .

and lol

i kind of agree. i dont use software mixing very often at all because i almost feel the same but i figured i'd try something new. its just hard to get into mixing in my room with my dog barking at the storm and shit... i just threw a quick mix together and it has some shaky parts (no train recks... just screwed up levels and stuff) i really need to do another run to have it the way i like but dont really have time... so to get a product i am truly happy with, it woulda taken about 3 hours plus tracking and fixing a few levels and about 1 hr in ableton.

with the way things are going, imo, i can see people only using the computer in 5-10 years or sooner. I can remember when i was playing cds in 00-01, and people said "why don't you use vinyl?" and "real djs use vinyl"(i remember alejandra saying that to me at my friends salon). Then it was, you can't play shitty sounding mp3s. And now its you can't use programs like ableton, because its boring or its cheating. But with people using mp3s, and laptops, why shouldn't someone use ableton(not aimed at ES but at Meatwad). If they can do what they want with a laptop, more power to them.

agreed... its kinda like when i bought my 1200s with the nightclub needles and sony headphones because i thought thats what i needed to "keep it reel"

i can do shit with my 1000s that i and more people couldn't dream about realistically doing with any vinyl.

when it comes down to it, i think they mean djs should put demos out with what they will be playing on. if i play strictly CDs, i should make a mix using my cdjs... if i lug around my laptop then i think its cool to make a mix on ableton.

at that, i make mixes for friends and parties all the time so spending a few extra hours making it perfect isnt really a big deal to me.

I use a lightscribe burner to label my CDs w/ a pic of me spinnin along with some text info...looks kick ass but more professional...no case or paper to have to keep up with!

Just tell the bar owner you have a following of 300 people that come out to see you play every night. That seems to work for 90% of the DJ's in Dallas.....

Until it's time for the 2nd night....

hey man, if you're an ableton dj .. use ableton to make your demos
if you're a serato dj, use serato to make your demos
if you're a cd dj, use your cds to make your demos
and if you're a vinyl dj, use your vinyl to make your demos

I don't give a fuck what's gonna happen 10 years down the line as far as media goes, all I'm sayin is you should stay true to what you can do as a dj.

I just don't think that anyone that has made a mix in ableton has sounded as clean live (aka without ableton) yet that I've heard except for sasha or digweed

that's all

edit: and before anyone gets offended... I think only if you're at the stature of sasha or digweed (or someone "up there") do I think you're established enough to get away with doing this

Here is just a tip from last night. I got like a couple of CDs & one of them are completely blank - no name, no NOTHING. Even if I liked it I would have no idea whose CD is was if I hadn't remembered.

I used to get cds that had a business card on them & LOVED those since if anyone asked who should come to dallas I'd pass on their card with demo.

i have noticed with Ableton mixing djs recently that when they mix it just drops in the mix like boom & perfectly, to perfect...ie when i heard Pete Smalls at Zubar the other day...great tunes and choice but it looked real easy and not as fun as actually trying to make the mix in whatever state our minds are in..he he, i suppose i am still part of the real old skool..
