Re: History of DALLAS HOUSE MUSIC: Bill's Records

I remember going in there after placing an order for John B - Up All Night and it was just in the regular bin, and not being held for me. So I grab it and pay for it and then remark that I'm glad no one else bought it since I waited over a week for it to arrive. He looked like he wished he had charged me more. I always got a cheaper price than my friend that went digging with me, which was pretty hilarious. One time that same friend went through a ton of vinyl, just trying to hear new things he might want to buy. Bill gets pissed and rants about how he has to pay someone to restock all of that vinyl. He said he listened to too much stuff. When he went to pay for what he found... Wow. I don't think he was short on money to pay for the restocking that day. I dug the store. I found good tunes and met some good people.

Hah! I remember I picked up a few solid tunes, brought them to the counter
and pretty much seemed like he was just calling out random prices. good stuff.

Re: History of DALLAS HOUSE MUSIC: Bill's Records

things just got really bad up their in the 00s at the end of his run(at the original store). It got really weird when he had dirty south mix cds(i actually started going their only for that, cuz everything else was pretty bad), along with those ' electronica' import cds from the late 90s in the front cd racks.

At the same time he was getting big draws on texana/folk shows with lots of pseudo hippies. You could tell that nothing had been ordered in the vinyl sections in 6 months and the record players and head phones were busted as hell. I remember bringing my headphones in to use.

in the early(edit to mid) 90s i dont think it was that bad.

before Bills got all picked over that shit was the bomb snizzle snap snap!! Back in the day domestic 12"s were between 5 and 7 bucks. I remember during the Duran Duran days, imports were only a dollar more than domestics.
Those were the days

Shit. Those days flew the fuck out with the quickness then.

I still think I've got the receipt for the $16 Henry Street CD single that he sold me for "Funk Phenomenon" back in 1997.

That's right. $16 damn dollars for a CD with 3 mixes.

I paid it because I didn't know any better because I'd just gotten into music, but at least I didn't pay the $30 that a buddy did for the Phats N Smalls first full release.

Claude Jesus.

Re: History of DALLAS HOUSE MUSIC: Bill's Records

He took me for $80 for the CCCP red cover vinyl single. Man i felt dumb when i saw the domestic copy in Oaklawn for like 6 bucks or so. live & learn. That CCCP still rocks though, Cameron Paul remix for the win.

Being hoodwinked by Bill. That used to be a rite of passage on par with going to the Lizard Lounge as being part of the music scene, lol.

It was through Manny that I learned about Oak Lawn Records and AT/PT back in the day. Core came after the fact.

Reminds me to stop by your joint sometime soon, Jason. Have you uncased the Disco/Funk stuff yet? Still keen on diggin through all that.
