and yeah, anyone who said that Bills had a bad selection either was looking for horrible stuff or just went way late in the game because back in the day he had PLENTY of good stuff

back in the day there were MULTIPLE distributors from which to choose from (from a "house" standpoint so to speak)...the buyers at Bill's had a wealth of product to choose from and more times then not(again from a "house" perspective) they were more "hit" than "miss"... I remember going into Bill's for the first time when I moved here back in '89 and presenting my "want list" to Tim Schumaker, Luke Sardello, Derrick Wright and Keith Pillars...I'm like "I need these tracks"...they had a look on their faces like..."what the fuck is this stuff???"....haha... Some of the stuff I was looking for they were eventually able to get for me...other releases I found thru the power of mail order from around the country...New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, etc.

yeah for a while, until the whole house thing really took off, you could find it at Bills for sure. They had everything from the jankyest chicago pressings of stuff to first generation detroit stuff to...well EVERYTHING. Once the whole DJ culture thing took off and the place got picked over though....... Also, he had these no schooled people ordering for him after Luke and everyone left. So you ended up with a bunch of DJ Icee and "of the moment" trax being ordered blindly by kids with no history which made the stock of the store nosedive...then the internet just came in and put the kaibosh on it.

In the early to mid '90's Bill's was the epicenter and ONLY center for house music in Dallas... But on the other hand...I remember when I first got to Dallas and visiting VVV Records on Cedar Springs and they had TONS of old disco...they couldn't give the shit away...I don't know if Luke, Tim and them guys were aware of the goldmine up there...I don't know if they had made the "house is disco" connection yet... now a days...EVERYBODY and his mama are tripping over themselves hopping on the "disco" train...or is that "nu-disco"... i seriously gave the guy try after try cause i lived right by the shop on coit. left several large stacks of records on his counter to be restocked. before that i was mostly buying left-field stuff from minto in denton and going to the record conventions at the rennesiance hotel. I was late to the Bills party as well. Late 90s like mentioned above. I was able to piggyback on some mail orders for new stuff so I went mainly to see what little gems surfaced here and there. I still found things I wanted but also as mentioned... I left on several occasions with a stack left to restock.

Its hard to imagine how stores like Bill's got by on product alone, with all the horror stories they had going around about them. Oaklawn's loan hookup was they had to play every record for you, and having the tune you wanted analyzed by every dj in the store as it was playing meant you had to hear everyone's opinion like it or not. I used to hate going to Bills & Oaklawn, and feel like everything i listen too was picked over a million times. Truth be told it was. I guess depending on what side of the fence you were on, determined if you got what you wanted. If you worked there, then it was a safe bet you got what you wanted, fuck the customer. Sure guys a had good reps for doing great orders and picking the best music, i guess you'd had to be there to see it first hand, but there were times, the shipment just got off the truck , and tunes were all ready spoken for, forget that the fact you were first in line, or the times you would see the whole order go on hold to the staff. Daft Punks "One More Time", Mojo's "Lady", Azzido da Bass " Dooms Night Out" all seem to come to mind, when you just knew you as a customer had no shot at those tunes, until after nearly a 2-3 week period of the staff having its time to push them at their nights. Most times i wondered if they just didn't order them because they wanted the tune to remain upfront. I think as far as stores clerks/owners go Wes Lee from Tech*Sun was of the few guys, who would take the time to actually give a fuck about what tune your after, and see to it that you got it. With the exception of ATPT i quit supporting Dallas stores, because his service was that good. I modeled my service after his, when i opened my store R-Type, and once i really got to know customers they would tell me, they hated being big timed by some Dallas local dj at other stores. good times.... not so much. I grew up by Bills, and I bought a lot of cool stuff there in the 80's/90's, but then I realized that I could get the same shit for 50% cheaper on Amazon sooner or later and started shopping there. When I started buying records I went to T-Sun or shopped online.

Oh, and that's funny you mention that about Wes Jason. He's one of my best friends and just about as honest and good as they come. He worked hard and ran his shop with integrity. When I visited your shop in FTW that one time to unload a bunch of records I recall thinking how much it reminded me of Tech Sun.

well you gotta understand i bought the shop, and basically gutted the place. It helped having all that inventory to start right away. Those first 2 years were some unsure times for me, and ended up being the 2 of the best years of my life. Wes is still a good friend, back then when he handled all my orders, he used to just take down my full order, and by friday i'd have $300 worth tunes to pick up. It was easy, no hassle, no bs. Made sense to me to continue the service he gave, and really considering where the biz was headed how could i not have , and expect to be successful.
